Donald Trump’s questionable ‘blind trust’ setup just got more questionable
Donald Trump's decision to leave his children in control of his fortune during his presidency was already an unusual and eyebrow-raising setup. And on Friday, it became even more so.
A day after Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, announced that Trump's three oldest children -- Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric -- would control what he labeled a "blind trust" for the president-elect, the Trump campaign announced Friday afternoon that all three would also serve on Trump's presidential transition team executive committee.
In that role, the trio will have input when it comes to the people Trump picks for key administration posts.
Watchdogs who were critical of Trump's "blind trust" in the first place say this proves that the lines between President Trump and his money will be too fuzzy under this setup.
"The fact that they have been included as part of the transition team just shows how inappropriate their role in bridging the gap between him as a businessman and politician is," said Meredith McGehee, a strategic adviser at the Campaign Legal Center. "It’s a clear demonstration that there is no firewall between the two." In addition to blurring the line between Trump's presidency and his money, skeptics note that his children will now also have control over the people who will be put in charge of regulatory decisions that could affect his multi-billion-dollar fortune.
Kenneth Gross, a political law expert at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom, said it would be okay for Trump to involve his kids in the transition, but their dual roles are problematic.
aren't both of those things actually illegal?
Wow.
aren't both of those things actually illegal?
probably but i doubt the litigous congress would spend the hundreds of hours they did on clinton to investigate him. oh bonus he'll probably charge stays at his hotels to the american tax payers
hes basically setting himself up for the most corrupt presidency since nixon with an open door policy to lobbiests, an extremely questionable trust system, a cabinet of both washington insiders, k street lobbiests and alt-right darlings like bannon, and finaly no real understanding of the limits of power or law
Why not just leave it with his wife? is the first lady also barred from running a business or is he afraid she'll take the fortune and bail?

If leaving it to his kids is sketchy, how is leaving it to his wife, the first lady, any better?
That's still not a blind trust
Presidents are literally supposed to eliminate as much of the conflict of interest as they reasonably can, hence, the blind part
aren't both of those things actually illegal?
Neither is, nor the two together although its indeed shaky ethically. (says so even in the quoted part)
Friends or family members running your blind trust slightly defeats its purpose, then again it's not unheard, and as the article mentioned it was hypothesized that Clinton would have had a similar arrangement. After all you still want your fortune in hands you trust.
I don't know much about transition comitees and their workings but I guess the same reason applies here: you want to be absolutely confident in your people.
What I'm getting at is this seems more like a trust issue here rather than him wanting to make financial gains some way (running for presidency in itself is pretty bad for that).
Yeah I'm feeling pretty good about my theory that this whole campaign/presidency is fraudulent.
Wait, I thought they were just going to run his businesses while he did president stuff to avoid the conflict of interest.

That's a conflict of interest if his family is doing it, since there's no way of knowing whether or not he has details on what the company is up to.

History question: when did this become a thing? Many of the original founders and early presidents had businesses and/or wealth outside of politics and I doubt they had blind trusts.
At what point in time did we start to demand blind trusts for presidents as opposed to just having their family run it?

Lyndon B. Johnson started the tradition in 1963, and most presidents have continued it.
And I don't think that historically that many presidents had the wealth or power that modern billionaires have.

All his children are educated and with former business experience and his wife is just an ex-fashion model. Who would you pick to run your business ?

I think the issue is that it isn't technically illegal, but it effectively opens you up to lawsuits from every business on the planet. So it's not the most intelligent thing to do.
