• Whats the deal with bands and genres?

A lot of people ask me what kinda of music I listen to. I say everything. A lot of people ask me what my favorite band is. I don't have one. I never listened to a song, and then listened to another song by the same band, and liked it. I find songs randomly, I like them, I listen to them. Often I check out other stuff by the same band, but I mostly dislike it. I don't care about genres either, I like songs in every single genre there is. I never understood why people felt the need to defend their particular genre, their particular band, their particular music, why so many people feel like the music they listen to is better, just because they listen to it. I never bought an album, I never bought band shirts or posters either. Am I the only one that is like this? Am I the only one that doesn't give a fuck about bands and genres? In my friend circle, I certainly am. What about you, FP?
You're right. All these "simple" music questions are dull to me.
I did this when I was little and didn't have much knowledge of music, if something sounded good I liked it, and I listened to all kinds of random songs by random bands in random genres. Then when I started playing the piano, I found that playing stevie ray vaughan and elvis stuff was much more fun than fur elise and stuff, so I started looking that stuff up and got into blues. And since then I've learned to categorize my music. Sure it's a little bland but I can't help it. I've never been that much for one specific band or artist though. Op, get yourself a Last FM account. :respek:
I used to do this but i got more musically. [editline]21st June 2011[/editline] this is what only casual music people do and they usually have bad musicing
I mostly listen to albums
I wipe all the genres in my digital music collection, I hate categorizing music.

I see the OP's point, but for me it almost never happens that I'll dislike the next song I hear from a specific artist. In the rare case it does happen, I'll give a third song a shot. Not every song is a winner, at least initially. Sometimes you need the whole album to experience the thematic flow. I don't defend anything musically; I like what I like and that's okay by me. You can like what you like too. I might say something is shitty, but that's more to get a rise out of someone.
There's no such thing as a bad taste in music - listen to what you enjoy.
I think he means that they don't know much about music.
I kinda did this once. I still will at times, depending on the band and how easily I can get a release.

The thing is, having conversations about music with simple folk is easy to do. It all depends how you do it. One minute I can talk about hip hop with a group who listen to not much else, next thing you know I'm with metalheads discussing Boris and Megadeth. It doesn't make sense but I find it amusing. :smugdog:
When I get the "everything" for answer I link them a randomly picked genre of what I listen then it's suddenly not "everything" anymore.

A fine film too.
what's the deal with airplane food i mean come on! [editline]22nd June 2011[/editline] and yeah, I do exactly what is posted above. no one likes "everything" and I find it incredibly retarded when people say that, or things like "I like everything but country lol!" because no, you don't.

Sounds to me like you're just a very casual music listener.

[editline]23rd June 2011[/editline] Happy music, calm music etc
I'm pretty much the exact opposite of OP. I find most music boring, but when I hear some new song that really captures my attention, I immediately look the artist up and search for more songs by them. I tend to stick to bands I discover that way.
Is that glitch-step-core-whatever? I like it. Have some stuff
I just call it darkcore, and I think you just wet my taint with that song you posted. I dont care what genre that is, it's good. Heres something bit similiar
Most bands hate being categorized too.
I'm like this too OP. I only listen to artists that are known by less than 10 people[sp]my last.fm is a cover[/sp]and have no albums. I stop listening to them as soon as an artist is known by more than 10 people or have an album out. The genre of the artists I listen to has to be undefined, I stop listening to them as soon as they are categorized.
I'll listen to anything if it sounds good. But the genre is a base for me to search off so that I can find more good music. I only listen to one genre. Good music.
I'll listen to anything if it sounds good.
If it sounds good? You mean if you like the sound of it. :smugdog:
I agree with you OP, I listen to songs i find all over the internet. Random background songs for trailers, And lately, ive been listening to game music. Sometimes it feels like my friends listen to songs just cause the band they like made them.
Sometimes it feels like my friends listen to songs just cause the band they like made them.
Well, usually people do listen to music because they like it...
Sometimes it feels like my friends listen to songs just cause the band they like made them.
I like and respect everything I have in my library. And I have a LOT of things I think aren't so good. :smug:
The real question is, do you like progressive dreamfunk or post-avant jazzcore?
