[quote=Mike Hornby]John Lennon's handwritten lyrics for Beatles song A Day In The Life sold for more than $1.2m (€968,000) at an auction in New York.
The controversial song was the final track of the classic 1967 album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which spent 27 weeks at the top of the UK charts.
The double-sided sheet of paper features the lyrics -- starting with "I read the news today, oh boy" -- written in capital letters, along with cross-outs and corrections.
The paper previously belonged to Beatles road manager Mal Evans.
Sotheby's, which organised yesterday's sale, touted the document as a "rare glimpse into the Beatles' songwriting dynamic" with Lennon noting where Paul McCartney would insert his upbeat verses.
Double
The winning bid was almost double the pre-sale estimate of €562,500.
Sotheby's said bidding quickly became a contest between two of the telephone bidders who "competed tenaciously" to acquire the celebrated musician's autograph and lyrics.
The winner was an unnamed American who received a round of applause from those in the auction room.
David Redden, International Chairman of Sotheby's Books and Manuscripts Department, said: "The outstanding price achieved for these handwritten lyrics is testament to the iconic status of the Beatles, John Lennon and especially this song.
"We are thrilled that these renowned lyrics were so well received today."
