Facebook has introduced a new Timeline feature that allows same-sex couples to declare their marriage status on the site with icons that best reflect the relationship, rather than the standard icon of a bride and a groom used for straight couples.
The feature was first noticed over the weekend when Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes married his partner Sean Eldridge. An icon of two grooms was added to Hughes' Facebook Timeline to announce their wedding news.
Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg was among one of the 1,800 members that Liked Hughes' update.
This isn't the first time Facebook has showed support of same-sex couples. In February 2011 it introduced two relationship options for those in the lesian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, including "In a domestic partnership" and "In a civil union."
In addition, Facebook has partnered with GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) to prevent anti-gay bullying from occurring on the site. It also launched a Network of Support panel with MTV's A Thin Line campaign to address LGBT issues and launches a Stop Bullying: Speak Up campaign with Time Warner.
"Following Facebook's addition of domestic partnership and civil union to profile options last year, these new marriage icons for timeline are another important way for same-sex couples to be recognized," Allison Palmer, GLAAD's head of campaigns and programming, told Mashable. "This move is the latest in a series of measures Facebook has taken to support and include the LGBT community, which earned it the distinction of being the first social media company to receive a GLAAD Media Award earlier this year."

good on them, but they still haven't added a gender option for transgender, androgyne or genderqueer people. how hard can this be?
That's what myspace is for
good on fb

Can you explain why those are needed? From all the arguments I've had on Facepunch I thought you guys believed that they should just put down the gender they want to be, not the one they are?
Shame the majority of gays won't be able to use this yet.

I think it bases it off what gender you set on you timeline, so it probably recognizes that.
But I'm not so sure if they made one for Lesbian couples

Im referring to gays not being able to marry.
And then half of America stopped using facebook.
(good)

You either identify yourself as a male or a female. That's all there is to it. That's the god damn definition of gender.

Trying to pigeonhole people into two different categories isn't always accurate.

Oh.. Yeah bit of a shame but I hear the UK is legalizing it soon and in Australia it is gaining political interest.
I'm straight and I support Gay Rights, I think all of my friends do as well.
right after oreos homosexuality incident, Lol homophobes gonna be ragin

We have civil partnerships/ marriages in the UK, they're for both hetero and homo unions. It's a way of legally declaring your partner in a state ceremony compared to a religious one.
Also you get the same legal benifits as a religious marriage.

do you also cry and whine when you find there are only male and female bathrooms in public places
people who "aren't" either male or female and refuse to be called either are a minuscule minority

it's possible for someone to identify as niether, or to just be so apathetic to the concept of gender that they don't find it necessary to identify as anything in particular.
but yeah that's a fairly small amount of people so you don't really need custom icons for them

Calling the response from Homophobes "FACEBOOK IS FOR QUEERS, LET'S ALL GO TO GOOGLE+"
[sp]Google also supports gay rights/marriage[/sp]
Shame the majority of gays won't be able to use this yet.
what a crying shame they can't have two men standing next to each other instead of a man and a woman
I'm okay with this.
[editline]3rd July 2012[/editline]
Actually no scratch that I don't really care because I'm not on Facebook.
UNLIKING FACEBOOK. FUCKING FAGGOTS
...wait.

It's not practical to do that kind of shit but he's making it sound like he thinks people who don't identify as male or female are just making shit up
Trying to pigeonhole people into two different categories isn't always accurate.
Ah the constraints of language and practical life.
We can't have a single word for every single type of gender or sexual identity, if this was the case we would need approximatively 7 billion different words for approximatively the same thing. Needless to say when it comes to practical life you can't afford to please absolutely everyone by taking in account every single possible gender identity that exists, that's why categories exist and that's why you have to comply and verbally fit in one of those categories. No one cares if you are a transgender woman, just let people call you she, go to the female bathroom and be done with it, it won't damage your identity as much as you pretend it will.

That's exactly what I'm saying, actually
People are male or female. Transgender people are also male or female, as they're either males who want to be/identify themselves as females or females who want to be/identify themselves as males. What other gender do you want there to exist, "amorphous blob"?

You spend a lot of time in other people's minds?
I don't know how to describe it because I just identify as male, but given that there is so much information and discussion on the internet about androgynes, I don't know how you can just say that they're full of shit.

have you seriously never fucking heard of genderqueer, "third gender", genderless, etc.?
have you seriously never fucking heard of genderqueer, "third gender", genderless, etc.?
Should they not just pick the most appropriate option? If they're physically male, identify as genderless, male would be most accurate.
Another two examples:
Male identifies as Female, I'd call that middle ground. Pick whichever you feel more appropriate
Male identifies as amphibious train: Male is more appropriate.
I'm curious, is there any American company that has stood out against gay marriage?
It's a stupid thing for a company to do, but I'm curious if anyone has. All I've heard are companies supporting gay rights like FB and Oreo.

Depends if you count political parties as companies :v:

shut up it is in this case and you know it

Bathrooms are based on sex not gender (what you physically are).
I think facebook could do with a "none" or similar option. That isn't too painful to add, and people who would use it would likely appreciate it.
But actually now I look facebook asks for your Sex not your Gender anyway, so this argument is pretty pointless.
What wouldn't be hard, and avoid the bullshit, would be an 'other' option for gender. Nice and clean.
