http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-15203542
US President Barack Obama has said his jobs act would insure the American economy against another downturn, even while the situation in Europe worsens. He told reporters at the White House that lawmakers should think "long and hard about what's at stake" before the bill goes to the Senate next week. Mr Obama has been touring the US in recent weeks to promote his $447bn (£290bn) American Jobs Act. Republicans reject a proposed tax rise on wealthier people to pay for it. Mr Obama told Thursday's news conference he would support a new approach by Senate Democrats to pay for the act with a tax on millionaires, rather than his plan to raise taxes on couples making more than $250,000. 'Not a game' A tough-talking Mr Obama warned that if Congress failed to act, "the American people will run them out of town". Continue reading the main story “Start Quote If the goal is to create jobs, then why are we even talking about tax hikes?” Mitch McConnell Republican Senate leader "This is not a game," he warned lawmakers. "Any senator out there who's thinking about voting against this jobs bill when it comes up for a vote needs to explain exactly why they would oppose something we know would improve our economic situation at such an urgent time," he said. Touting the bill as an "insurance policy" against a return to recession, Mr Obama challenged Republicans to explain their opposition to his plan to create jobs and rebuild US highways, bridges and schools. Such new stimulus spending on infrastructure is one reason why Republicans oppose much of the jobs initiative, along with its proposal for tax increases on wealthier people and small businesses. Republicans in the House of Representatives have passed a number of bills as part of their own job-creation agenda. Their legislation has included proposals to loosen pollution regulations and make it easier to drill for oil and gas domestically. Job seekers line up outside a job fair in Washington state Long queues at jobs fairs, like this one in Washington state, have become a common sight But none of the bills has been taken up for a vote by the Democratic-controlled Senate. On Thursday, Mr Obama defended his decision to criticise Republicans, sometimes by name. "I think it's fair to say that I have gone out of my way in every instance - sometimes at my own political peril and to the frustration of Democrats - to work with Republicans to find common ground to move this country forward," he said. He added: "Each time, what we've seen is games-playing, a preference to try to score political points rather than actually get something done on the part of the other side." The president said that the debt crisis in Europe was the greatest potential threat facing the American economy, which he said "really needs a jolt right now". US unemployment remains jammed at 9.1%, and analysts expect data on Friday to show only modest job growth. Mr Obama cited independent experts as having told him that the American Jobs Act could spur 2% in economic growth and create up to 1.9m jobs. But the president's speech on Thursday did little to impress Capitol Hill Republicans. "If the goal is to create jobs, then why are we even talking about tax hikes?" Republican Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell said on Thursday. House Speaker John Boehner, meanwhile, said Mr Obama had "given up on the country" to focus on his re-election.
Hopefully it will goe through
It won't.
Obama's getting tougher on Congress.
Obama's getting tougher on Congress.
He should have been since day 1. It's the only thing I really have against the guy.
Hleba , hleba ! My golodny ! (Cries by Russian people before the Tsar was overthrown, translates as "Bread, bread! We are hungry!"
I can easily see that being shouted if it doesn't go through.
I think Obama just trusted that the two wings will eventually compromise so far; but you can almost see his frustration lately. Not saying that it's a good thing to try and appease to both sides in this particular situation but considering the two Republicans' horrible responses in this source, I can fully sympathise with his stance.
"I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody."
Obama sounds like he's getting really pissed off at the bi-partisanship
good
Obama sounds like he's getting really pissed off at the bi-partisanship
it's almost as if he shares the views of the people!
Gobama
We REALLY need to replace these politicians, they think running this country is a game, and its causing many people to suffer for it.
And so obama took a stand against all the bullshit of capitol hill, he taxed the wealthy, increased jobs, and won the election.
So... Who wants to uh. Raid Congress?
Saw this when watching PoliticsNation with Al Sharpton. Obama telling Congress to do their job.
I haven't always agreed with his policies, but to be perfectly blunt - I'm happy my president is finally growing a pair of balls in dealing with things.
The republicans called for a vote the other night and Harry Reid stepped in and stopped it.
It's funny because the republicans still want to be taken seriously, even after they said NO to them and the wealthiest losing their tax cuts Bush gave them 10 years ago, or else they wouldn't raise the debt ceiling (Which is dumb anyway) But not raising it would mean America just basically going down in flames. They would rather hold onto their little tax cuts, OR, watch the world burn... What kind of public servant is that
How about ending the War on Drugs. That'll be moving us forward.

At least over here Obama gets a lot of shit because he doesn't do jack. The thing is, many people don't know he CAN'T do jack in some situations and it's not made better by the campaigns that focus on single persons like we're electing kings. And you can see Obama is sick of playing a nice diplomat, he really wants to see something happening now. Whether that proves he's an idealist that hasn't given up yet or he's afraif of the next election is another question of course. But you can see his drive and the resistance he has to face with some of his laws.

The amount of political bullshit he has to deal with the corrupt Republicans and the pansy Democrats on a daily basis, along with constantly being blamed as the source of all that is wrong because of the corrupt Republicans, has to be terrible for his health.

For example they just recently added a surtax on millionaires to help fund the bill:
Oct. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Senate Democrats are weighing a plan to substitute a surtax on millionaires for a package of tax increases President Barack Obama proposed to pay for his $447 billion job-creation plan, a Democratic aide said. Majority Leader Harry Reid outlined the concept to Senate Democrats during a closed-door meeting today, said the aide familiar with the discussions, who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly. The aide said it wasn’t determined how the surtax would work or if it would be used to partly or entirely replace the increases proposed by Obama. Obama wants to pay for his plan by capping itemized deductions for individuals earning more than $200,000 a year and married couples earning more than $250,000. The plan would also boost taxes on private equity firms and end oil and gas subsidies. Some Senate Democrats are objecting to those tax increases. Senator Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, last year unsuccessfully pushed an amendment that would have allowed Bush- era tax cuts to expire for millionaires.
Source: http://www.businessweek.com/news/2011-10-04/senate-democrats-said-to-weigh-millionaire-tax-in-job-bill.html
