China and Taiwan have held their first high-level talks since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.
Wang Yu-chi and Zhang Zhijun, the top cross-strait officials from each side, attended the four-day talks in Nanjing.
No official agenda was released for the talks, which are widely seen as a confidence-building exercise.
China regards Taiwan as part of its territory. In the past, all talks have gone via quasi-official organisations.
Mr Zhang, head of mainland China's Taiwan Affairs Office, said: "It's impossible to imagine in the past that we could sit here and meet."
"We must have some imagination if [we want to] resolve some difficulties, not just for such a meeting, we should also have a bigger imagination for cross-strait future development," he added.
Mr Wang, head of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, described the meeting as "a new chapter for cross-strait relations".
"For us to simply sit at the same table, sit down to discuss issues, is already not an easy thing."
I hope they can come to some sort of agreement.
Doubt that Taiwan(Chinese Republic) wants everything back from the PROC and I don't think that PROC is going to be taking Taiwan back anytime soon.

CHINESE TAPEI

Of course not, pretty sure that's been off the table ever since the late 70s when Jiang Jingguo became President. His father probably saw the writing on the wall too. This will probably be left unresolved for some time, potentially until the PRC begins to open up to some degree and another form of one country, two systems is elaborated.

Over here we spell it "Taipei." Anyways, Taiwan, or more formally the Republic of China, are way better names. Chinese Taipei is a bullshit compromise term that exists solely to appease the PRC whenever Taiwan wants to participate in some international event.
To be honest I see the PRC as the legitimate government of China. When Chang Kai-Shek moved to Taiwan he seemed to be under the illusion he could retake China and continued foreign policy as if the Communists were a temporary nuisance.

this was settled like 40 years ago when chinas seat at the UN was given to the PRC and the DRC was made nonvoting status

The question here is over the legitimacy of the Taiwanese government, not the Chinese government, if there's any question at all over the legitimacy of either government, which there really shouldn't be.

The PRC has killed somewhere around 70-100 million people during its tenure. I highly doubt the Nationalists could have done worse.

They both want to control each others territory. Isn't gonna happen.
Stand your ground Taiwan and don't give in.
The argument that Taiwan is the "real" and "better" China is pretty dumb. They're p much the abusive ex elite that had to flee China after the abusive new communists took over.

They didn't really get a chance did they but I don't doubt they wouldn't have done their best.

Not that many Taiwanese believe that Taiwan is the legitimate government of China either. I suspect that among moderates, the left wing, and the realists, mostly we hope to be considered a legitimate, independent country.

Frankly, I don't see how that excuses taking away Taiwan's UN seat, and Taiwan being relegated to what is essentially a second class nation. Anyhow, despite the abuses of the KMT in the past, I'd say that Taiwan now is a far more democratic nation than the PRC. Democratic states trying to claim that the PRC is equally legitimate with Taiwan is basically an exercise in hypocrisy.

the Taiwanese haven't really sought after that goal since the 70s. They mostly just want Taiwan to be a separate state without all that technicality bs of "chinese taipei"
ROC not DRC FYI
No, they just decided to strip the Congo's voting rights out of spite :v:
China gave us a limited time to go back to them, before 2030 they said, (they made a undersea tunnel with a sign said "Beijin to Taipei, will be made before 2030")
hope there's not gonna be a war going on then.
As a Taiwanese, I really don't want to be merged by China, we really don't.

Yeah, well, (barring events prior to the civil war) 228, the White Terror, and Green Island were all a thing. I'd much prefer the Taiwanese government but that doesn't mean the GMD were always the rosey and optimistic rulers who got kicked out by the big bad communists. Oh, and to say nothing of the government's crime/business relationship and subsequent scandals.
i am glad to hear that china and china are now talking to eachother

Isn't it still on a 50/50 division on party lines?
