Russian aircraft carrier so unreliable it sails with its own breakdown tug
The ageing Russian aircraft carrier that sailed through the English Channel escorted by the Royal Navy has been plagued by years of technical problems and is accompanied everywhere by a tug in case it breaks down.
The plumbing is so bad on the 55,000 ton Admiral Kuznetsov that many of its toilets cannot be used, while it has had repeated problems with its power and a string of accidents, naval experts said.
The Soviet-era warship is leading a flotilla of eight naval vessels to the eastern Mediterranean, where its aircraft are expected to join a renewed assault on the rebel-held city of Aleppo. The Admiral Kuznetsov sailed through the Dover Strait billowing clouds of black smoke on Friday “marked every step of the way” by the Royal Navy’s HMS Duncan, the Defence Secretary said.
Nato officials have said the Russian deployment is the largest of its kind since the Cold War and designed to demonstrate Moscow’s military might as well as blitz the only large rebel-held city in Syria. But as the ship sailed through the Channel, it was mocked on social media by maritime enthusiasts, for its notoriously poor state of repair.
One Royal Navy source said: “All their ships look shiny on the outside, but are pretty horrid on the inside. You only have to look at the smoke she’s belching out to see not all is well.
“We have had people on board Russian ships in the last 10 years or so and it’s always a bit of a shock. The conditions inside are pretty manky.”
I mean at this point they should look at just creating a new carrier class from scratch because the Kuznetsov has been plagued with problems since its inception.

They are
But they don't have the money to do it
That's pretty embarrassing really
Didn't China renovate one for their use? I wonder if its plagued by the same problems.
Well show them how it is done then, rich coming from the guys who have only 2 unfinished carriers
Except they're going to work when they're done, and they aren't rotten hulks from the 1980s :^)

But that's the point... We are by building those new carriers.
Well show them how it is done then, rich coming from the guys who have only 2 unfinished carriers
Why would we need to? Look at our past carrier history they didn't need a tug to follow them.

Reminds me of this from a few days ago:

Then again, they're british, that's even worse

But then I remember that we have the Type 45 destroyer and I don't feel so embarrassed any more.

Someone hasn't done their research, HMS Queen Elizabeth has been completed and launched, she floats and drives by herself, she's just not formally commissioned yet and wont be until next year but she's certainly not unfinished, as for HMS Prince of Wales, still under construction and wont be commissioned until 2020. Also its worth noting, we've got the money to actually update our navy, not still drive around in rotting husks from the cold war like a lot of countries.

It's rather fitting symbol of Russia.
Portrays itself strong and amazing from outside, but from inside it is broken and dirty.

Shock-horror: a problem was found and the MoD is actively taking steps to rectify it.

Self admitted overlook of design that's being corrected, its the engines that fail then take out the whole electrical system, they're refitting them with diesel generators as said to resolve this. New technology always has its initial flaws.
Also it's worth it to point out that the Kuznetsov has to sail with a tug on every journey

The bit extrapolating from the shittiness of the Admiral Kuznetsov that Russia's military capability is drastically exaggerated is, like, seriously wrong. The modern Russian military may not be anywhere near equal footing with the US, but the reason why Russia has a single falling-apart carrier is that surface warships were never central to Soviet military doctrine. They realized the US had them solidly beaten in direct naval warfare by the 50s, so they instead churned out attack submarines, cruise missiles, anti-air weapons, and attack aircraft all designed to sink carrier battle groups. What few surface combatants the Soviets had were mostly intended to carry ridiculous numbers of sea-skimming cruise missiles.
With Soviet military doctrine focused on potential WW3 in Europe, they had little need for expeditionary power projection across the ocean like the US did. You don't need carrier-based aviation if the enemy is coming to you, so the few carriers the Soviets fielded were more the result of Soviet Navy politicking than serious military need.
The modern Russian military is no slouch, just not designed around the same capabilities as the US.
tl;dr the carrier's falling apart because nobody in power cares about it, they might as well make it a floating shrine to putin or something
The kuznetsov isn't really a "real" carrier anyway rather than a shitty hybrid "aircraft carrying heavy cruiser" . Although I'm not sure it even has the AShM armament anymore. The only conceivable reason it's not yet scrapped or permanently drydocked is probably national pride
This is who the Phillipines dumped us for? Ahahahahaha

maybe that reflects more on you then the fillipines
This is who the Phillipines dumped us for? Ahahahahaha
Just heard from SECNAV at an all hands call today that the Phillipines defense minister has already contradicted what Duerte said the other day. At any rate it doesn't bother us because we'll still continue patrolling international waters in and around the China sea, as SECNAV said "The Philippines is just one country, we have support elsewhere in Asia and we are still the strongest sea power in the Pacific."

Not a chance.
At least now I get to use this in threads offsite when discussing the Phillipines

Does it run on coal?

Vodka and salt.
Jeez that's some really righteous smoke, that boat seems to really be stinking up the channel with bad engines and fuel!
How?
Just avin a little fun mate, don't worry about it.
Funny actually looking into this carrier, it looks like the engine problems it's been having are actually quite recent, from images it's around late 2013 that the Kuznetsov started to shit out vast amounts of black smoke, interestingly this was also around the time the ship was planned to be refitted but that never really happened.
Something bad happened to it's steam powerplant around this time pretty clearly, it shouldn't be burning that black.
I love how half this thread was British people trying to defend their engineering
If your ships are anything like your cars I'd avoid them like the plague

I mean American cars aren't exactly known for being the best either, but our ships...

That'd be funny if most of the tech and designs where not actually american, german and french.
Fuck our automotive history though, so many bad decisions made near the end of it.
