• PSX & PS2 Controller to USB

So not too very long ago, i went through some old stuff and found my old PS1. Tried to hook it up and all, but it appeared it might have gone off and died completely. [SUB](And that means i have no PS1 to try it on. Nor a PS2, then this would obviously not have been neccesary, now would it lavacano?)[/SUB] So i thought about having emulators running on PC instead, hooked up to my TV, and it would even be more slamming instead of using my Logitech air gamepad or WHATEVER it was, getting a hold of one of the old PS1 controllers! It could easily be run through a cheap china-shit-peice-of-plastic adapter which barely costs anything. Problem just is, getting a PS1 controller today, in just somewhat of a decent condition is just about impossible. The old ones i had had mysteriously gone missing. I managed to get a hold of some some now, but they are terribly shitty, and barely works, but they did prove that the adapters works nonetheless! Reading in the comments about PSX to USB adapters, i read it even worked for PS2 controllers as well! Well bitchin'. I found a place in Denmark that still sells brand new GENUINE PS2 controllers. So, before buying one, i tried hooking up a friends old PS2 controller to it through one of the adapters. Only to find out that it doesn't really work. It get some kind of a signal, but only the analog joysticks gives somewhat of an output. The rest of the joystick appears to be completely activated all at the same time. Well fuck. And so far, i tried running it through three different cheap-shit adapters hoping they would make a difference. But alas. Same as before, the PS1 controller works just fine, but the PS2 controller does the same trick. It could be the case of the PS2 controller being broken through, but i doubt it, unless you guys can tell about a similar case or maybe you could tell by this story that it IS actually broken. But i really came here to ask about what i could do except the adapters. Maybe some there is a way to rewire it to USB compatibility?
Have you tried pressing the analogue button between the thumbsticks?
Have you tried pressing the analogue button between the thumbsticks?
The analog works just like it should on the PS1 Controller. But on the PS2 controller, i have to enable analog in order to get the only working signals from the joysticks. [editline]30th March 2013[/editline] ... And i just remembered that is how it always worked... derp
I'm using an xbox gamepad for a PS1 emulator fine at the moment, been playing through the Crash Bandicoot games
[t]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41apmC0SVUL._SY300_.jpg[/t]
I have this adapter, and It worked flawlessy, but I needed to install a proprietary driver, so no plug'n'play. Also, I think the controller is fucked. Have you tried a different PS2 controller?
I have this adapter, and It worked flawlessy, but I needed to install a proprietary driver, so no plug'n'play.
Not even sure what a proprietary driver is for, and what do you mean by "no plug'n'play"?
[t]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41apmC0SVUL._SY300_.jpg[/t]
I bought one of those ages ago from Dealextreme. Windows Update had the drivers needed for Windows (since it's just a regular old gamepad from a driver's perspective), and it worked fine in Linux.
Here is what the PS2 controller looks like when plugged in. Thats the signal i get. The two joysticks works just fine when i turn on analog, but thats it. I can plug a in a PSX in the second port on the split adapter, and it works just fine! ... What if i have a multimeter, is there a way i can confirm or check its actually broken?
Not even sure what a proprietary driver is for, and what do you mean by "no plug'n'play"?
There's no drivers for the adapter/controller, so you need to download them. Plug n play is basically the drivers are already installed.

When i go look in properties for any of the adapters, the last update was from 2006, and it doesn't find anything new online when i make it check. Though, there was a CD with one of the adapters, a mini-cd with a small panda on it, and on that CD was just a small driver for "USB Steering wheel" ... Regardless, i installed it, and tried the controllers again. No apparent changes. [editline]31st March 2013[/editline] I am more interested at this point to see if i can't use a multimeter and connect to pins and push a button or two to see if there is a faulty connection somewhere causing this

The device is just a generic gamepad device, so it uses the generic drivers provided by Microsoft.

The only thing i want RIGHT NOW, is to figure out if the PS2 controller is broken and if i should go buy a brand new one right way... Is there a sure way i can check it with a multimeter? Hook too pins up, and start mashing the buttons that windows shows all as pushed down, and see if the problems lies there?
If you've got an actual PS1 or PS2 you can try and play something on that.

Now if you had just taken the fucking five seconds to read the very first line in the first post. A++ for the reply

a friends

You ever consider that maybe your friend's PS2 counts, jackass?
You ever consider that maybe your friend's PS2 counts, jackass?
Sure considered, but that is obviously not the case here, is it? Hence few posts so far of trying to figure out how to diagnose a controller not with the use of obvious choice of a console, of which there is no possibility of getting. Last couple of posts i made was about using a multimeter. Obviously, i am interested in someone who knows about small electric circuits. Obviously.
Well you never fucking mentioned shit about the other dude's PS2. But it's OK, I didn't know that I was supposed to magically know your friend was an idiot and dunked it in the bathtub or some shit, my telepathy antenna must be on the fritz. I'll get right on fixing that.

Note to self, never help this guy.
Boxes all around because that's a great laugh. Oh well, moving on. I took the thing apart, measured crossovers from the last point on the board to the plug. All connections are intact. Whats the next step? According to the picture posted earlier where it shows all the buttons are being activated, to the diagram Craptasket was so nice enough to supply me, what should i try to measure next?
Nobody is going to help you if you're going to be a dick like that. If the PSX controller works in the adapter but not the PS2 controller the issue lies within the controller itself, not the adapter. But the new controller and it should work.
If the PSX controller works in the adapter but not the PS2 controller the issue lies within the controller itself, not the adapter.
Is there any significant changes from a PSX to a PS2 controller, electronics-wise, that would make it impossible for the adapter to understand the signal from a PS2 controller??
But the new controller and it should work.
¿Que?
Is there any significant changes from a PSX to a PS2 controller, electronics-wise, that would make it impossible for the adapter to understand the signal from a PS2 controller??
No. The DualShock 2 is backwards compatible with a PS1, so there's no reason it shouldn't work on an adapter that takes Dualshock 1 controllers. The only change I believe was the addition of the analog buttons.
¿Que?
He obviously had a typo and meant to type "buy."
