London (CNN)Sadiq Khan, a practicing Muslim and Labour Party politician, has been elected mayor of London, marking a political milestone in the Western world.
...
His victory followed an unusually bitter campaign against Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith, the son of a billionaire, in which race and religion have proven ugly flashpoints.
In London, the mayoral campaign took a particularly vicious turn when Goldsmith, trailing his rival in polls, penned a controversial column May 1 in Britain's Mail on Sunday newspaper.
Headlined "On Thursday, are we really going to hand the world's greatest city to a Labour Party that thinks terrorists are its friends?" the piece ran with an image of one of London's signature red double-decker buses that had been blown apart in the 2005 terror attacks in the British capital.
The attacks, carried out by Islamist extremists, left 52 people dead.
In the article, Goldsmith accused Khan and the leaders of the Labour Party of having, "whether intentionally or not, repeatedly legitimized those with extremist views."
The piece provoked outrage, and was seen as Islamophobic and unnecessarily divisive in a diverse city whose residents, Muslim and non-Muslim, live under the specter of the ISIS terror attacks that have struck Paris and Brussels in recent months.
Some critics charge that the Islamization of Britain has begun. Also ironic at how his opponent— Goldsmith— has attempted to create an unnecessary divide between Muslims and non-Muslims during his campaign. It is almost as if Goldsmith is against assimilation of Muslims into Britain or something and would prefer they remain a "separate group" divided from the general population.

If a candidate for London Mayor thinks this is a way to gain to support then they are desperately out of touch and really shouldn't have been a candidate in the first place.
This is bad. Religious leaders in general are bad.
Islam isn't modernized at all and this will have terrible consequences including:
More religious schools where children are indoctrinated,
push for more leniency towards sharia-laws,
more "muslim areas",
and probably more mosques where terror recruitment will happen.
When you import islam you will get islam.
Islamization? The population is becoming culturally more diverse, so is it not only natural that people of other cultures will become represented in positions of power

To be fair we have the pretty much same issues with christianity but that's apparently okay.
People rarely turn to terrorism/violence unless they're persecuted or marginalized.

He isn't a 'religious leader'. He's a Muslim.
Perhaps the dude is fine and won't bring his religion into the position he's been elected to hold. Heck, perhaps he's even a pretty good mayor. Who knows.
He voted for the same-sex marriage bill, which is nice to see.
I have no issues, providing his religion remains a personal thing, and does not influence politics, there are many larger issues with secularityin the UK I have - the appointment of bishops in the House of Lords for example.

Seriously? 'Terror recruitment'? I don't think they have terrorist recruitment offices in mosques, and 'Muslim areas' is just plain out segregation. Is this what Britain First thinks or something?

I think a person can be more than their religion. Even if that's what Islam is about.
Bearing in mind the alternative is Zac, who:
- Supported the bedroom tax
- Was against using public money to create guaranteed jobs
- Was against keeping benefits in line with prices, and against increases for the disabled or long term ill
- Was against taxing bank bonuses and using the proceeds to create jobs + affordable homes (we need more houses here)
- Was against a tax break for small businesses that open more jobs
Yeah... I think I'd take Sadiq over him.

He's only Muslim chill out. He's not some secret Jihadist. He's someone who happens to be Muslim. While those facts is too contradictory for you to accept, normal Muslims exist.

sadiq was raised in the same borough as me and has represented it for a while. he seems like a genuinely good person and imo you can expect good things from him
Well if the people didn't have any problem with him (he was elected he didn't cheat his way through) then I see no problem with it?
I mean he's clearly not even an extremist or anything.
If he voted for same-sex marriage then really he's not all that bad, cannot be.
He's gonna link up with Obama and form Gogeta.

Yes, this is a legit and objective point

That's horrible. He should just renounce islam and be done with it.
The only people who even bring up his faith seem to be crazy racists. I find it more interesting that someone who came from a working class family and went to a fairly shit state school has won the largest personal mandate in British politics against a millionaire who went to Eton. He's also a former human rights lawyer and almost immediately after becoming an MP he started going after his own party's government for civil liberties stuff. Read his bio and you'll see that his religion is like the smallest part of his story
[editline]7th May 2016[/editline]
It is kind of like Obama actually like yeah first black president is a milestone but there's obviously more to him than that
That's horrible. He should just renounce islam and be done with it.
he cant renounce islam because doing so is against the laws of islam
spot the ukip voter
It's funny because he also supports Trump.

They do though.
I mean really, underground and open mosques are the terror recruitment offices. It appears in most documentaries and ISIS recruit stories.
Not saying mosques exist to recruit terrorists, but recruitment totally happens there.

Christians are persecuted all the time, you don't see them chopping people's heads off.
The only people who even bring up his faith seem to be crazy racists.
While I don't doubt this, religion isn't race and shouldn't be dismissed. It is a mindset and a whole set of belifs.
You wouldn't elect someone who believes the earth is flat. Religion should be regarded in a similar manner.
They do though.

I cannot imagine a majority of mosques being recruitment centers of any kind. Those that do have that issue are an insignificant minority.

Fear mongering bullshit. FBI had tried to infiltrate a mosque in Irvine by sending one of their agents to incite terrorism. The people of the mosque reported him to the FBI instead.

Thousands of young people leaving Europe to go fight in Syria isn't insignificant.
