Hi there,
Not so long ago I have downloaded Ubuntu 9.10 (this isn't a rant about the OS and such).
I have a pretty "old" laptop, it's MSI VR610X with Radeon X1250. When I have installed the OS, I was happy cause I knew that it would be supported - sadly it's now in legacy with Linux propertiary drivers. The opensource drivers are (sadly) crap (no offense to the developers). GLXGears run @ about 50fps on 1024x768.
TBH, I don't know why AMD made it propertiary - the opensource drivers ain't gonna be better IMHO.
(Ubuntu 9.04 worked fine...)
Did you encounter this shit with your GPU?

Back in the 4000 series cards, AMD went "fuck linux, nobody uses it anyways", released some opensource drivers, and left it to die.
I'm not so familiar with linux, but a friend of mine told me there's websites for downloading optimized drivers for linux, including ATi drivers, so atleast there excists better alternatives for linux.
I didn't have any problems with AMD drivers on my laptop. Soundcard on the other hand..

Actually for everything but 3D, the open drivers are vastly superior to the shitty proprietary driver. And 3D is rapidly catching up.
Ubunut 10.04 will have a much more recent driver, and it'll be much better than 9.10 with regard to the open radeon driver.

I have a Radeon 4850 which is still supported by the proprietary driver, and I wouldn't touch that shit.
