How can I share files on the network?

I set up a media designated computer using old parts. The OS on the media pc is XP but, my main computer is Windows 7 so I can't just use homegroup.

Any help?

If you're up for learning (and having a bit of fun, if you're interested in this stuff) perhaps take the time to setup a SAMBA server? It's a Linux server with the capability of hosting for Windows.

samba is identical to windows files and folder sharing

its the same protocol

why would you want to install linux if his existing XP installation can do it much more easily
