The ABC said "multiple official sources" had confirmed the attack, and that it would cost millions of dollars to repair the damage. ABC quoted unnamed officials blaming China for the alleged hack. The BoM said it would not comment on security matters and that its systems were fully operational. It said in an statement that it "continues to provide reliable, on-going access to high quality weather, climate, water and oceans information to its stakeholders". The ABC said it had been told the attack was "massive", and quoted one official as saying it "could take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to fix". I'm curious what the damage was if all they're systems are working properly but it "could take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars to fix". Did the lose a lot of data or something?
ABC talking shit, move on everybody.

There's very little special stuff to gain from breaking in to a meteorological agency, save for weather model logic (but does the BoM operate their own model?). Otherwise, it's mostly the same stuff for every other intrusion: passwords, communications, etcetera. And hey, I guess if you wanted a free copy of some publicly available data, you have that too. On their site when I was poking around a few times the radar data seemed awfully low quality, so maybe it was someone disgruntled that knew the quality was better and just wanted raw files instead of the web garbage? If anything, you'd bust in to command and conquer (for things like radars and satellites), not rummage around for whatever you can find.

i mean I accidently took the perth serpentine radar loop down for 24h while testing a script that scraped the radar images to make into a video -- the serving code looks like it was from 1997 and had been patched up with a feature here and there since by an endless chain of unpaid interns it wouldn't surprise me to hear the "hack" was someone from china viewing some forecasts
Practice run before trying to hit something larger?
Could be, maybe NOAA is next, maybe not. I'd find NOAA being next a bit doubtful as that's going from a small target with maybe a few international connections here and there to one that has loads of them.
If anything, you'd bust in to command and conquer (for things like radars and satellites), not rummage around for whatever you can find.
They have connections to Australia's DoD and other services in which the hackers would be interested breaking into due to their reliance on weather etc.
Ov yeah, because the ABC is perfect and not written by imperfect human beings.
You're taking his post out of context. I think we can all agree that he means that the ABC usually won't report something unless they have reliable information to back them up. Unlike other news agencies that will see a twitter post and report it as fact.
They have connections to Australia's DoD and other services in which the hackers would be interested breaking into due to their reliance on weather etc.
Thing is, the many parts of the Department of Defence are relying on the BoM's data as it costs too much to maintain such meteorological services by each separate service. Of course the Government is going to take this seriously. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole system goes under a complete revamp to bring it's up to industry standards or even higher.
So the picture in the OP is the outcome of the hack? Odd pics they use these days.

There are models and stations as well as military that report weather conditions which are not public.
I don't think China wants to go to war with Australia. If so I'm kinda fucked right now. <-- [editline]3rd December 2015[/editline] Flagdog says I'm in Japan for some reason, but I'm in China.
