This thread isn't about specific parts that I want to purchase, but rather, what parts would I need to look at when building a new computer?
A simple list of things needed would suffice.
CPU (processor)
GPU (graphics card)
RAM (memory)
Motherboard
Hard Drive
PSU (power supply)
Case
Optical Drive (CD Drive)
I think that about covers it.
Awesome. Thanks.
Also, how would I know what's best to get? I mean, how do I find out what's top-of-the-line?
Do I just find a couple and start comparing from there?
Edit: Also, if I already have something I want to keep in an old computer, how would I know if it'll fit in with the new stuff?
To compare products, there are things called benchmarks.

That's a good site for benchmarks. It has CPU, graphics cards and hard drive benchmarks. You can also find specific benchmarks for things, so for example, if you wanted to know whether 1 graphics card is better than another when it comes to playing Crysis, you can probably find a benchmark comparing their performances in Crysis.
Generally, people re-use their hard drives if they're not really old, and also their optical drives. These almost always fit with any build.
With things like the processor and graphics, it's harder. It all depends on your motherboard. If you're planning to keep your motherboard, you'll have to find out what processor upgrades it can take and what graphics card upgrades it can take. If you post your motherboard model, we can find that stuff out for you.

It tells you all your specs of your pc, in a lot of detail. It helps when hunting for new parts or seeing what you can upgrade etc.
Don't forget the CPU cooler too.

Lots of processors come with coolers that are fine for stock clocks.
Word, above posta. The cabage, bro. Invest dat green cash to the next big one. Wen i say dat " Big one " I say best of the best, new advancement, new profit. Buy, but make sure dat cash aint ripping you short of your turf.
Part have to be compatible. You can't just get an AMD motherboard and then buy an i7. I would just ask FP to pick out the parts for you.

Or pick parts before you purchase them so we can review it.
