Let's begin
ChromeOS

You've used the browser, now use the OS! ChromeOS is one of the fastest GUI operating systems out there, taking 10 seconds to boot. The entire system is in a web browser, and your files are stored on the cloud, so no data on the laptop! (Edit: The CR-48 beta laptops have limited storage) It's the perfect OS for netbooks, if it was public.

Get the tech info, and the current source code at https://sites.google.com/a/chromium.org/dev/chromium-os
Fuck, it's linux based. This is what I get for not using Wikipedia
ReactOS
[img_thumb]http://www.reactos.org/media/pictures/2005/logo_final_01.png[/img_thumb]
Want the benefits of windows without the price, or do you want the source code? Enter: ReactOS.
ReactOS. ReactOS is an attempt to run Windows programs on non-windows PCs, but unlike Wine, it is not related to linux at all. However, it does incorporate some parts of the Wine libraries and code.
Get the Alpha, read more, and get the source code at http://reactos.org
FreeDOS
[img_thumb]http://www.freedos.org/freedos/images/logos/fdfish-color-url.jpg[/img_thumb]
This OS is 100% compatible with DOS operating system. It's open source, and of course, free. You can actually buy a dell or HP pc with this operating system. It's like DOSBox without the box!
Get it, read more about it at http://www.freedos.org/
Mike OS

This isn't really the kind of operating system you are probably looking for. It's a x86 OS in assembly, and has a surprising amount of features: A simple GUI, networking, BASIC interpreter, image displayer, and all written in Assembly. The best part is: It's open source, and easy to make stuff with. It's meant for educational purposes.

Plan 9
[img_thumb]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7e/Plan9bunnysmblack.jpg[/img_thumb]
From the makers of C and C++, bell labs bring you a free operating system! Development started in the mid 80s and continued into 2002. Meant as a successor to Unix, it replaced Unix as the main research OS at Bell Labs. It was released in 1992 commercially, again in 1995, and again in 2000 (but not commercial). The final release was in 2002 as an open source project.
Read more, etc. at http://plan9.bell-labs.com/plan9/
AtheOS
[img_thumb]http://www.atheos.cx/logo.png[/img_thumb]
This OS is a free and open source x86 operating system. Meant as a clone of AmigaOS, it transformed into its own operating system. Includes GUI, its own file system, multithreading, and many other features. The website server is running AtheOS!
Get it, read more, etc. at http://atheos.syllable.org/index.html
FreeBSD

FreeBSD is a unix based operating system. Descended from BSD unix which came from AT&T unix OS. Mac OSX is based on part of the FreeBSD code. It was started in 1993, the first release came in the same year. FreeBSD is a full operating system.

AmigaOS

AmigaOS is an operating system started in 1985 for the Amiga 1000. These days (4.0) it's a PowerPC core. AtheOS was based on it. It is both closed source and proprietary. In 2006, the company that owned it (Amiga Inc) cancelled the contract with Hyperion Entertainment, the makers of the os, thus leaving this operating system at 4.1. In 2009, Hyperion was granted rights to the Operating System to continue development on Amiga OS 5

Haiku

Haiku is a open source version of the BeOS operating system. It was started before development stopped on BeOS in 2001 as OpenBeOS, but Be, Inc was bought and development ceased. The first alpha release was in 2009 and then again in May 2010. The development is run by Haiku, Inc. A non profit organisation created for the project. It is completly compatible with BeOS

AROS
[img_thumb]http://aros.sourceforge.net/images/toplogomenu.png[/img_thumb]
Another based on Amiga. AROS used to stand for Amiga Research Operating System, but was changed to AROS Research Operating System. It is compatible with AmigaOS 3.1. Thus, it is an x86 operating system. It is designed to be lightweight and flexible. Some parts of the source code is actually used in AmigaOS 3.5 and 3.9, and MorphOS has been ported from AROS.

MorphOS
[img_thumb]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/b/be/Spbu479.png/250px-Spbu479.png[/img_thumb]
I'm gonna have to try this AmigaOS, considering the amount of things based on it. This is another powerpc AmigaOS based operating system. It's lightweight, efficient, and flexible. Looks like mac to me, but whatever. Anyways, it has an OpenGL port, proprietary and free drivers. It is also compatible with AmigaOS 3.1. It's also closed source, but free. Also has a port for the ERIKA ARM-based computers.

FreeVMS

I don't have much to go by, the Wikipedia article is a stub.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeVMS]
FreeVMS is a free software clone of the VMS computer operating system, licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. As of 2010, the project is in the early stages of development. The latest version is 0.4.
It consists of a kernel (planned to be POSIX-compliant[citation needed]) and a DCL command-line interpreter.

Well, I'm gonna stop typing now, so post any other operating systems, and I'll add them.
Note:[del]Only active operating systems, and not based on Unix (So no darwin, BSD, ETC)[/del] Ok guys, there's only one rule: Can't be a linux distro unless it's heavily modified i.e. ChromeOS, Android OS, etc.
[editline]3rd February 2011[/editline]
Oh wow title misspelling.
Chrome OS is linux based iirc
MINIX, the operating system that inspired Linux
BSD, the operating system that inspired many of the tools available in OS X (ie macports)

If you insist...
(It's unix though)
Copland OS. It was used in the anime Serial Experiments Lain, but was a real OS at one point. Unix-based, I believe.
There's also Amiga Workbench.
What about Haiku
AmigaOS 4

Is copland free?
Is copland free?
I believe so, but it's severely outdated.

Hm? Copland was never finished, a lot of its features were included in Mac OS8 but I didn't think it was actually completed let alone released. As for the Copland OS used in the show its fictional and shares only the name.
What OS's are there, other than OSX, Linux, and Windows that are not outdated, still will work well with a gaming PC?
And my mother could use?

The answer is to pick OSX, Linux or Windows.
If it's a gaming PC then Windows obviously.
