Hey ppl, I need a high-mid range card, total max. budget is half a grand. I still can't decide between the 7970 or the 670, for the price I would definitely go with the 7970 but idk. *Upgrading from a gtx 460 PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 2GB Video Card ($357.18 @ DirectCanada) Monitor: Asus VS238H-P 23.0" Monitor ($149.99 @ NCIX) Total: $507.17 (Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.) (Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-10-13 23:23 EDT-0400) or PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon HD 7970 3GB Video Card ($269.00 @ Canada Computers) Monitor: Asus VS238H-P 23.0" Monitor ($149.99 @ NCIX) Total: $418.99 (Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.) (Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-10-13 23:25 EDT-0400) 460 vs 670 460 vs 7970 Thanks in advance :)
Get the 7970, it performs better and is cheaper.
I say 670. Higher memory clock. Also gigabyte has a superclocked version which increases the clocking to ~1100 mhz (the one i have). I like it more.. I had trouble with the 7970 so yeah. I say get the 670. Nvidia has been good to me. It can be good for you :)
The 670 is actually a horrible choice. The 760 is $100 cheaper and you will get ~1-2 FPS less. The 7970 vastly outperforms both the 670 and the 760, but the best choice is probably the R9 280X which was just realized. The twin frozr version is supposed to have the best cooling.
I have a similar question guys. I am looking to upgrade from the terrible GT 220 I've had in my desktop for the last couple of years. I'm looking at either the GTX 670 or 650 Ti Boost. I'm leaning more towards the 650 to save money that I can invest in a better CPU as well. My main question is for games ranging from Skyrim, Civ V, Rome II, ArmA: II, and both of the Metros; will an i7-920 at 2.67Ghz be sufficient for both. My current setup on low settings gets me about 15-20 fps in ArmA, Metro, and Rome with between 25 and 35 for Skyrim and Civ V on medium settings. I'm considering taking the extra cash saved from the 670 to invest in a better processor if you guys think that's part of the problem, but I know for a fact that the 220 simply isn't powerful enough for anything I have. Also, I'm not currently at home to answer other specs for my computer, unfortunately. I think the current power supply is powerful enough for the 650, but may not be for the 670. My total budget is around the $700 mark.
That processor is fine, please list your PSU so we can know what you have. For $700, I highly recommend you get an R9 280X. The 670 and 650 ti boost, are both bad choices for you. The 670 because it has horrible value, the 650 ti boost because it's way under your price range. It's a good value, but you should get something better. If you don't have a good enough PSU, just buy a new one, you'll have plenty left over for a good graphics card. You could also get the R9 290X for that price if you're willing to wait.
Okay. I'm away from my PC for a week, so when I get back I'll pm you my current PSU. I think it's a 450W, but I might be mistaken. The main reason for going with the 650 is it is, as you said, well under my price range's top end for total spending. I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card definitely, my PSU if I need to, as well as in the near future get a better sound card for audio recording (guitar and vocals). That's the enticing point of the 650 is I can come under budget, use it for what I would need to use it for, and be able to invest in everything else as I need to sooner.
