What did they think would happen when you give money to terrorists? They're not your buddies.
I can imagine Saudi Arabia cracking down hard on their domestic terrorist issue. They don't fuck around when it comes to their national security.

their default response to domestic extremists is to export them to other countries. they've been doing this literally ever since they became a proper country.

I remember reading somewhere that this is one of their long term goals actually because they consider the Kaaba to be an idol or something.

You need to understand difference between Saudi Arabians and Saudi Arabian government.
Shias are minotity in SA and face severe discrimination. Iran is a Shia country so they back up shias in SA and even tried to overthrow Sunni royal SA government.
Since SA and Iran's proxy war intensed in last couple of month I don't think SA government didn't know about yhis attack.

If they blew up the Kaaba they would lose most of their supporters and fighters. The only people that would be fighting for them left would be edgy 20-something converts who think that they're handing Assad a new one.
