After looking at how safe an older Civic was, I decided that I would rather live a bit longer in the event of an accident and I need a car sooner or later before it starts getting cold because I can't motorbike on slushy roads (although I manage fine without a car in warmer weather). Now, in the time since I sold off my hotrod Zed (a few months) I've grown an attraction to the newer fuel-efficient hatchbacks but out of these three cars from the brands I trust I can't really decide which to get after test driving each one because they all have their own upsides and downsides from interior to exterior design. So, is there one that is generally regarded the best balance of reliability, safety, fuel efficiency, looks, and comfort or is it more just personal preferences?
If it comes down to personal preferences, I'll choose the one with the highest resale value or lowest running costs, but where would you find such information?
Fiesta.
Yaris and Fit are a bit mundane, something your granny would buy.
I actually thought the fiesta was the most mundane-looking...
Accent
$12000, 6 speed transmission standard, plus 40 mpg and it's not bad looking either

Fiesta and Yaris are ugly as fuck

good warranty too
and quite reliable

although it kind of looks like the retarded offspring of a GT-R and an Impreza, that price is hard to beat for a new car
I'll look into test driving one I guess
Fiesta if you wanna have fun, Yaris if you want something boring but reliable, Fit if you want the middle ground

looks like the front of a Focus and the back of a Matrix

Have a buddy with an Accent, great little car, and Hyundais are only getting better as time goes on.

well, the base price is actually $13,000 but you could still easily get one for $12,000 I bet, since dealers are pretty negotiable
I'd go against the fiesta basically because the only points mentioned were about looks, which wasn't your main consideration. Unless there's another reason
accent if you can, fiesta if not
Yeah, NEW Accent if Possible. If not, then the Fiesta.
The interior is nice and smart, and if I'm not mistaken, it's the safest one too.

i wish honda would upgrade their interiors like hyndai does
Am I the only person that loathes hatches? :v:
I test drove a Fiesta the other day, and wasn't that impressed.
The things I didn't really like were
1. The pedals
- Way to small, and touchy
2. The interior.
- My opinion, but way to space-age and too flashy
3. The automatic transmission, (if you get a standard, dis-regard this)
- It had a mind of its own, plus some. It down-shifted too much. I wanted to move from 22mph to 25mph, so I gave the fiesta just a little gas. and it down-shifted, and the car jerked from 22 up to 25. Maybe its just me, but I wasn't really impressed by it.
disregard all three and get the hyundai accent
Whatever you get, don't get an automatic. They're always rubbish in small cars.
Does it cost more in the US to get a manual?
Gotta admit, Hyundais are looking like pretty good cars these days. My dad had a '98 Hyundai Accent breifly when I was younger and it was a horrible car, so bland and had no feel to it. He traded it in after a couple of months and bought an Alfa Romeo. These days they are looking just as good, if not better than the competition in their class and a 7 year warranty is a huge reason to buy one.

No, but most of the time it's only offered on the base of the base models.

10 years here in the US.

no, it costs less. by about $1,000 generally.

$25,000 MSRP for the base model? No thanks, I'm looking for a decently newer cheap and reliable car and my price ceiling is somewhere around $17,000
[editline]28th May 2011[/editline]
If only that because of the Ford Fiesta and Fit Sport with the actual amount of money I'd comfortably spend being around $14-15k

I personally don't see the point in getting a manual in a small car, though. Having owned a 240z and MR2t in manual, I found it more annoying in stop-go daily driving (and eating while driving) than anything and I've given up being a car enthusiast because it costs too much so I don't have any use for manual control of my car.
Accent is the only car in its class with a 6 speed auto AFAIK.
