Security forces in the South Korean capital Seoul have clashed with protesters during one of the country's biggest street rallies in recent years.Police used tear gas and water cannons against demonstrators demanding the resignation of conservative President Park Geun-hye.
Tens of thousands of people of took part in the march, according to police.
It brought together various groups, including trade unions opposed to the president's business-friendly policies.
Others were protesting against the imposition of state-approved history schoolbooks, which they say whitewash South Korea's past dictatorships.
The majority of the BBC article is being quoted there, sorry, but there are a couple of sentences left out plus pictures.

I heard the police were using water cannons laced with capsaicin. I wish I'd kept the source.

considering their current president is the daughter of a dictator, its not surprising.

I think capsaicin is a common ingredient used in tear gas (hence 'pepper spray'). I'd heard that they were using it, accompanied with some grisly (but unsourced) pictures of burns which were presumably caused by it.

You can't get burns from capsaicin. It hurts like fucking hell but deals no permanent damage because it just makes you think you're on fire.

Hmm. In that case either there are additional materials being used (the burns looked like swollen, heavily inflamed lumps with sores in the centre of the swelling), or the images were simply taken from elsewhere.
