Vista continuously says it reports a system file mismatch.

I've had this computer since January 09, if that's important. I got this error once before, about half a year ago, but I just restarted the computer and it never showed up again, until yesterday. Now it shows up once every few hours. I ran a full system virus scan via Avast, but it didn't show anything. I can't even access the control panel. I haven't tried restarting the computer, but I think a permanent solution is better than a temporary.
So, anything I could do?
Edit: Oh, and it's apparently stuck in non Aero mode.
Edit 2: The error is 0xC004D401.
It would be nice to know the exact error
0xC004D401.
Your key has either been modified by a virus or some other program or your "key" is now being detected by windows as not genuine. Reactivate or call microsoft.
How do I reactivate?
start menu
click search window
activate windows
enter
The search can't find it. I guess I'll call Microsoft later.

Already tried doing that, System Properties won't open. I think it probably has something to do with the Control Panel refusing to open.
you on a admin account?
I believe so, I could edit control panel settings before this started happening, and I haven't signed out since.
for shits and giggles, restart the computer
Doing so now.

Still getting the error, but before I got it, I noticed the Product Key was different on the Control Panel than the one on my tower.
And right now, I got an error saying "An unauthorized change was made to Windows. Windows has discovered a change that will result in limited Windows functionality. Use the link below to find out how to fix Windows."
This is the link [url]http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate/?OSV=6.0.6001.2.00010300.1.0.000.09.1033&RFM=2&LegitCheckError=C004D401[/url]
Edit: Apparently the last error only happens when I click the thing stating "This copy of Windows is not activated. Click here to activate Windows now."
Edit 2: And whenever I try to validate via the link, it gives me the same error I got in the first post that caused this.
Well the link tells me to download this: [url]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3664177/WindowsActivationUpdate.exe[/url]
It will then do its magic then it should tell you what to do next
It doesn't apply to my computer, most likely because you have 7, and I have Vista.
Well, is it prompting you to download something because that site will probably get you to where you need to go.
It prompts me to download something if I don't visit it with IE, but it says an unauthorized change was made to Windows after running it, blah blah blah, system file mismatch.
open a command prompt and run:
SFC /SCANNOW
[editline]14th June 2011[/editline]
Post any errors.
Doing so.

It found some corrupt files, but was unable to fix some of them.
post the log

that chatLOL'g is not helpful :colbert:
Other than the fact I know him and was talking to him over Steam about this makes my Facepunch post seem stupid. Don't even know why I posted it.

Yeah, I'm guessing there might be other things in that log...
Are you on Sp1 or higher?
SP1.
Edit: And I just learned there's a Service Pack 2. Oh.
try to install sp2 and see if the error goes away or somewhat lets you get farther
Downloading, this could take a while.
[editline]14th June 2011[/editline]
Finished DLing. I'll start installing very soon.
[editline]14th June 2011[/editline]
It didn't work. Apparently a system error.
[editline]14th June 2011[/editline]
I DL'd a system readiness thing. It's installing an update, and if that works, I'll retry installing that SP2.
