• How big should I make my windows partitions?

I'm planning to format after installing a new motherboard on friday, I want to partition my 1TB hard disk so I have an OS partition, and a Data partition. What would be the best size to set for a windows 7 OS partition?
Windows is around 30gb IIRC. So I'd probably make it around 40 just to be safe.
^this. Except you will want to have 20GB extra on it for system restore points, updates, etc.
I do like keeping a lot of restore points... think about 70GB would suffice?
I would cut it 90, 910. 90 for OS updates and all that bullshit. Extra space is never a bad idea if you can spare it.

I make my Windows partitions 30 gb, and I have plenty of space for software. I don't use system restore though, so I don't really know how much space that uses.
Is it possible to have my system restore points stored in a seperate partition?
I'd say 70gb. I have all my non-game programs there with Windows and still have 70% left.
I don't get why you want to make partitions, it's not like it'll load faster or anything. Also remember to make the partitions dynamic, so you can move space from one to another incase you ever need to.

How do I make the partitions dynamic? [editline]3rd November 2010[/editline] What would be recommended for an XP Pro installation?

I know it's somewhere in window's administrative tools under the storage management thingy, when you make a partition you can choose to make it dynamic, so you can transfer empty space later on.
That's a lot of new volumes
drive letter is a better way to keep track of that shit
drive letter is a better way to keep track of that shit
I prefer to use a combination of the two Back on topic: I got along with a 50gb Windows partition for a while (with all my shit on another drive), you should be able to as well
OK got myself a bigger problem now, I'm trying to resize the partitions from within windows. I've managed to clear enough free space to shrink the partition, but it's refusing to shrink due to there being some files at the end of the partition, I've tried doing a Consolidate Free Disk Space Defrag, but the locked files are still stuck there... any idea what I can do to move them? @ Above poster: What's allstore?

I'd rather try to do this with software I'm comfortable with... is it possible at all to do a free disk space consolidation before windows boots? EDIT: What a dumbass I am, I can just boot into my xp partition and defrag it from inside there....

I made my windows partition 50Gb just to have room for updates/service packs and restore points. Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit installed and nothing else on the drive except 1 restore point and some programs you can't choose where to install.
I have 40gb windows partition and sometimes it fills up.
real pros just use two physical harddrives [editline]3rd November 2010[/editline] small note: i reinstalled windows 7 about a week ago.

But that's just me
I would cut it 90, 910. 90 for OS updates and all that bullshit. Extra space is never a bad idea if you can spare it.
More like 90 / 840.
Barney and Stinson is on a 1TB drive. Barney's the windows partition, Stinson is data. Downloads is a separate hard drive so ignore that.

WIN7 is my Windows 7 OS Partition, which also houses all my installed applications. (Stored on my 1TB for faster speed) and Data is currently where all my data/games/downloads are stored. I gave my Windows drive a 100gb partition and use the rest of the drive for my video games. This has worked out really wall for me as the need for space fit almost perfectly into place. I have two more drives, but the purpose of those goes beyond the scope of the initial question.
I use a 30GB SSD with my OS on and it has 18GB's free
I tried keeping Windows on a separate partition, but I found it to be a huge hassle. Everything defaults to the C: Drive, so I had to be careful that I didn't accidentally install a massive game to C because I wasn't paying attention.
