(CNN)Turns out, the rich really are getting richer. And they'll soon own more than the rest of us put together. So says a new report, which estimates that the richest 1% will have as much wealth as the other 99% combined by next year. "The richest 1% have seen their share of global wealth increase from 44% in 2009 to 48% in 2014," Oxfam says in a report Monday. At that rate, the wealthiest will own more than 50% by next year, according to the report. "Do we really want to live in a world where the 1% own more than the rest of us combined?" asked Winnie Byanyima, executive director of the international aid agency. Many of us will be slaves to 1%.
It'd be nice to have a healthy working class again. :/
Soon we will be slaves to 1%.
we aren't already?
we aren't already?
Well, I don't feel much like a slave.
Anybody want to bring up the argument that we shouldn't be taxing the rich any more I offer now as the time to bring that up
How can we possibly overturn such an inequality? Thinking about it; I see no alternative where the majority of wealthy wouldn't try lobbying against the threat to their wealth
Well, I don't feel much like a slave.
this makes you the perfect slave "the ultimate slave is the one who does not know they are a slave" -Ghost of Yawmwen past
Well, I don't feel much like a slave.
Are you employed?

Snip -
Are you employed?
I think he means wage slave which is a term.
But they said it's gonna trickle down cmon
Are you employed?
I was once employed, but I didn't feel much like a slave then. Sure it was tiring but I wasn't anybodies property or being whipped or forced to do illegal things.
Make it illegal and try anyone who puts their money in a foreign bank.
I don't think you thought this part through.
we aren't already?
Not until the police start shooting innocent civilians.
this makes you the perfect slave "the ultimate slave is the one who does not know they are a slave" -Ghost of Yawmwen past
I see another person picked up the Yawmwen Gospel too? I heard it was a best-seller.
Not until the police start shooting innocent civilians.
I have some bad news then.
I like how people actually think Reganomics works.
I like how people actually think Reganomics works.
I don't know, it seems to work extremely well when people aren't abusing the hell out of loopholes in the tax system.
Capitalism, ladies and gentlemen. The greatest wealth-concentrating social technology ever invented. :downs: It's not a bug, it's a feature.
Capitalism, ladies and gentlemen. The greatest wealth-concentrating social technology ever invented. :downs: It's not a bug, it's a feature.
On the upside, absolute poverty is at the lowest level it's been in human history.
Problem is, in order to balance this you would need to implement a wealth tax on high amounts. As this increase is based entirely on wealth, i.e. share portfolio value increasing, nothing is taxed until the gain is realised or converted to cash. No country is going to be willing to implement a wealth tax in the fear that their wealthy people will flee to other countries who haven't done so. Self defeating cycle, ergo everyone loses. In my opinion, the extremely rich should be allowed to keep their wealth on paper for the sake of vanity, or highscore points or whatever, but a certain amount of their wealth should sit in an untouchable endowment held by the government where the dividends are put into balancing things out.
I think this article should be taken with a grain of salt, considering it's talking about inequality on a global scale. Like, if you have wealth of at least $1,000 (which doesn't need to be cash, could just be your car or computer), you're probably wealthier than more than a few thousand of the world's poorest. That isn't to say that wealth inequality isn't a problem, just that don't assume this is talking specifically about any developed nation.
Gotta love the wealth distribution
Well, I don't feel much like a slave.
That's the elegance of neoliberalism, instead of forcing you to do stuff you don't want, consumerism, money and the idea of limitless freedom make you exploit yourself. [editline]20th January 2015[/editline]
Yes, because the alternative leads to such prosperous [sp]totalitarian[/sp] societies such as the Soviet Union and PRC.
How about not thinking in black/white?
Capitalism, ladies and gentlemen. Much better than the fucking alternative. [editline]19th January 2015[/editline] Ninja'd
yes, a system that depends on endless growth and is completely unsustainable in the long run, CLEARLY is the best alternative :v: and the only alternatives are the soviet union and the PRC, of course
Does anyone have an economic explanation as to why this is happening? The more specific you can be, the better.
