This is an appreciation/discussion thread for the best Horror comic book character ever
History:
The character of Swamp thing was created by writer Len Wein and artist Berni Wrightson. He first appeared in a short story in issue 92 of DC's anthology Horror comic, House of secrets. The character was well received and give his own book. Swamp thing was released in 1972, a year after the house of secrets story. It should be noted that only the first ten issues were written and drawn by the original creative team (Len Wein and Berni Wrightson) these first ten issues has been re printed (In "Roots of the Swamp thing" 1 - 5, each Issue reprinted two of the original issues). Len Wein stayed on for three more issues until handing over to David Michelinie and Gerry Conway, from Issue 11 - 23, with Fred Carirllo, drawing the last issue. The series was cancelled after Issue 24.
Wes Craven Movie and the Alan Moore years:
By some miracle Wes Craven (Of Nightmare on Elm street fame) must have liked the original comics and decided to direct a film adaptation. During the summer of 1982 the film was released and brought interest back into the character. A new series of comics was released to coincide with the release of the film. The comic was written by Martin Pasko up until Issue 20, where famed comic book writer Alan Moore took his place. Alan Moore was picked by co-creator of the character (and editor of Saga of the swamp thing) Len Wein, to pick up the title. When Karen Berger took up the role as editor of the comic, she gave Moore complete creative control, revamping the character as he saw fit. Alan Moore completely swept aside the original origin of the character and making the character more of a monster than a man. Alan Moore's run has been said to be the most original run of the series. Alan Moore went back to the roots of the character (Pun intended :D) and make it a straight horror comic. Alan Moore's entire run is collected in a six volume set. It's a highly recommended read.
