Oh dam!
Get full specs tho please
You should totally give them to me...
Umm, I mean... for a home file/media sharer, Windows Home Server or something. For anything else, it's Linux, in my humble opinion.
Hey FP.
I am getting 2 free servers from the United Nations since my mother works there and she found out they were throwing away 2 Dell PowerEdge 1850 servers and we asked if we could take it instead of throwing it away.
Anyway, to the point, what server software should I run? Windows Server 2008 R2? These servers have 2 Intel Xenon 3.4 GHz processors in each. Each server is valued for more then 10.000$
I am going to use these servers as a fileserver and media server.
Sell them. You simply do not need that much power.
From the money you can buy many low-spec servers for personal use.
Only 10.000$ ?
yes, $10
don't be so ignorant, you know he meant $10,000! why else would he have 3 zeros after the decimal?
Could I have a small portion of a server to myself :P
Honestly, I'd just setup a VPS business If I had those.
Holy fucking jesus, that got a BIT more juice that needed for a fileserver
You sir are a lucky man
PowerEdge 1850 servers at 10,000$ worth? I have one lying around at home and I believe they're worth like 400€, with only 1 xenon. What is the full specs?
I don't have the specs with me right now, when I get the servers I will post.

Specs can be selected on purchase i think, the RAM can range from 256mb to 16GB though
-snip becuse of :ninja:-
I think the UN maxed out all the specs when they bought it. Which is why the pricetag is very high.

I shall take that into consideration.
Sell them.
Maybe, but I don't think you'd reach anywhere near 10,000$.

The $ at the end means it's a different way of writing it. In some languages a decimal in numbers really mans a comma and comma a decimal. It's strange for most north Americans to see but it means the same.
Congrats to the op for such great luck but you should run something more useful run some game servers or something.
Can someone give me ideas on what to do with them?
My internet sucks so I can't run game servers.
I'd like one!!1!
Fileserver? You should host a ton of gameservers on that beast. Perhaps even rent out gameservers.

Protip:
Americans/British: $10, £10, €10
Rest of the world: 10$, 10£, 10€
Host hi res porn videos.
Opps sorry, the processors are double Intel Xenon 3.8 GHz on each server.

Then you shouldn't keep them.
Start a VPS biz - spend 100 ( for 3 months so you could easyly recoop 100/3m to put them in a data center make money!
Uhh, as a side note, these servers were running for the UN in Scandinavia, they can really pack a punch. I think the server has maxed out RAM.
give me one, sell the other
Leak the information to wikileaks
Give me one instead of Buttsex :smug:
see if you can get any... info.. off them
