LANSING -- A study of Lake Michigan water near a major city's wastewater treatment plant revealed that high levels of common prescription drugs are infiltrating the lake and could have harmful effects for aquatic life. The study was performed by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and examined water samples taken near a Milwaukee water treatment plant and from the city's harbor, Environmental Health News reported. Researchers found high levels of the anti-diabetes drug metformin, the anti-bacterial drug triclosan and the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole as well as high levels of caffeine in both water and sediment samples taken from the lake. In total, 38 different compounds were found in the samples in some concentration, including acetaminophen, testosterone, codeine and several antibiotics. http://www.mlive.com/news/index.ssf/2013/09/prescription_drugs_found_in_la.html?#incart_m-rpt-2
I wonder if I can go and collect a bunch of water, and try to extract the codeine from it as opiates aren't water soluble. Lake Michigan is soo horribly polluted, I remember one year the Kalamazoo River flowed "the wrong way" and I looked into the water from the break wall and saw a fucking used diaper and just so much other nasty garbage floating in the lake, it's sad really.

snippety snip
Lake michigan touches 4 fucking states and Ludington is just the city I live in, what are you talking about.
just a joke, no need to get all riled up
the ludington saga continues
Lake michigan touches 4 fucking states and Ludington is just the city I live in, what are you talking about.
Is it safe to say that the water treatment plant isn't doing as good a job as it should be?
1 week later, "This Kid I know died drinking water from Lake Michigan"
Is it safe to say that the water treatment plant isn't doing as good a job as it should be?
It's not really that. It's with the constant rising rates of prescription medicine being used, it all flushes out when you piss and the water has to go somewhere.
1 week later, "This Kid I know died drinking water from Lake Michigan"
You'll get the shits soooo bad if you accidentally swallow a mouthful while swimming.
I remember a finding that showed fish in Puget Sound had detectable levels of anti-depressants in them. The waters around pretty much all major cities is pretty nasty. It's going to bite us in the ass down the road when bio-accumulation makes it that the delicious fish you're eating is full of drugs.
Laughing hysterically! Pure Michigan! -dirty biker voice- MICHIGAN PRIDE BROTHER!
I still love my state.
I still love my state.
Your state includes Detroit [sp]seriously though, what are the rural areas like in Michigan? I hear it's pretty nice there[/sp]
It is such a shame to see the beauty of this planet being carelessly destroyed by the ignorance of us. I wish more people valued the importance of the natural world we live in, because we have very serious negative effects on it when we aren't conscientious of our actions.
Wow, this sounds so bad, it might surpass Halifax in shitty harbour jokes :v:
Your state includes Detroit [sp]seriously though, what are the rural areas like in Michigan? I hear it's pretty nice there[/sp]
Michigans not a bad place to live, if you live away from Detroit or Flint its pretty fine. Its like most places, there are way better places to live, way worse places to live.
I'm bottling this up and drizzling it on my salad.
This answers a lot of questions
the hell is wrong with people
This answers a lot of questions
Like what?
the hell is wrong with people
Judging from the contents of the river; mostly diabetes, bacterial infections and sleepiness, with a bit of insufficient manliness, headaches and general pain.
the hell is wrong with people
Yeah, fuck people properly taking their prescription medications given to them by their Doctors!
Your state includes Detroit [sp]seriously though, what are the rural areas like in Michigan? I hear it's pretty nice there[/sp]
rural areas here can be really beautiful. lots of farmlands in the lower half of the state, and huge forests in the north half of the state. i went to grand haven this past weekend and took a dip in the lake. it was cold as shit
People who dump stuff in lakes should be made to drink the water from it

West coast Michigan is one of the most overlooked but one of the best tourist destinations in the US. There's only 3 west coasts in the US, and we get amazing sunsets due to the pollution from Chicago. Check it.
Your state includes Detroit [sp]seriously though, what are the rural areas like in Michigan? I hear it's pretty nice there[/sp]
Great if you love outdoors, there's nothing else here. Hunting and fishing is the best here..
I have been their dozens of times and I've got hypodermics and medical supplies washed up from Illinois more than a few. It sucks.
I used to swim in Lake Michigan all the time when I was younger, this makes me sad :c
