Former Liberal prime minister Malcolm Fraser has died aged 84.
A statement released by his office confirmed Mr Fraser died peacefully earlier today.
"It is with deep sadness that we inform you that after a brief illness John Malcolm Fraser died peacefully in the early hours of the morning of 20 March 2015," the statement said.
"We appreciate that this will be a shock to all who knew and loved him, but ask that the family be left in peace at this difficult time."
Sad to hear of his death. He was very vocal in his opposition to the horrific way we treat asylum seekers. It's a shame that he had to leave so soon, especially at a time where vocal opponents are few and far between.

Still got Bob and Paul but it's a shame Johnny hasn't decided to lash out yet, guess we'll have to wait a few more years
He'll never see the end of Abbott :(
Although many may dislike him for essentially booting Whitlam out in Nov "75, he was fairly progressive as Prime Minister (specifically on culture and immigration). Abbott is no where near the likes of him. Rest in peace
Can we not use BREAKING in titles please?

Sorry at the time the ABC was reporting it, it just came out
He endorsed the at the last election greens how crazy a flip is that from being a liberal prime minister.
I didn't even know that until today. Although it seems there are lots of people saying that he was always consistent and it's politics that has moved, not him. Pretty big shift really.

Still isn't really "breaking". It was an event that happened that effected directly a single person and that was the end. Not an ongoing issue, which should be the only tolerated use of " BREAKING", IMO.
Noooo, he was my only distant relative of importance!
