I thought the title meant Pentium IIs, lol.
Eegh its £187 in UK, I thought this will knock down the price of the 940's?
wow for once ebuyer is cheaper than overclockers for high end cpu's. Ill see if I get any extra money and I might buy one, oh wait they are am3? will they still work in a AM2+ socket?
yes
Am3 works in an AM2+ socket? Will I need to update my bios?
yeah. Look on the manufacturer's web site. you will also have to do a clean install of windows.
Man I bought the 955 a few weeks ago. If I knew about this processor I would have waited. Oh well i got a deal on it.
I don't like this processor. If you are gonna be spending $250 on a processor, you might as well go the whole way and drop and extra $30 for a i7 920, and get DDR3 RAM and the like and a new mobo(yes this will cost more than and AMD board but you get what you pay for). Escpecially since the 920 uses 10 W less power for more performance. I mean if you want to wring every drop of performance out of your old mobo and DDR 2 RAM then sure buy it, but I mean at this price range this isn't that great.

i7 920 for $200. So yeah. Come on AMD you can do better than this.
965 defintely outperforms it.
Doesn't seem worth the extra money over a 955 if you ask me.

The i7 920 uses more than the PII 965.

Is this better than 920?

I think it is. In most of the benchmarks I've seen, the 965 out performs the 920 in most gaming test :(

In artificial benchmarks the Intel 920 will mostly outperform it, but in gaming besides a few situtaitons the 965 will outperform the 920.
Will it out perform it be an appreciable margin? Or is the Core I7 still a better value due to the features of the X58 platform?

I don't know if a $300 processor, >$200 mobo, $100 RAM, and no upgrade for less than $500 could be considered a value.
I don't know if a $300 processor, >$200 mobo, $100 RAM, and no upgrade for less than $500 could be considered a value.
The i7 can be had for less than $300, their are a few X58 mobos for under $200 and amount of memory is entirely dependent on how much you wish to spend. That was not my point, however.
I haven't looked at AMD chipset motherboards so I don't know how they compare, but I do know that the feature set of the X58 platform is great. It wasn't a rhetorical question; I was actually asking for a valid comparison of feature sets and platform costs between the two processors and their chipsets.
So I take it you haven't seen the 790FX chipset?

The 955 already competes with the 920.

Would you suggest that mobo over the ASUS Crosshair III Formula? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131392

I'd probably pick the MSi because of the better feature set and price, but the ASUS looks good as well.
