• World's Best Halfpipe Snowboader Shaun White Falls During Run, Places Fourth
KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia — Shaun White stood at the top of the halfpipe, the last contestant of the competition, needing a near-perfect run to capture his third consecutive gold medal at the Winter Olympics. He has built an empire on such moments. It felt too perfect, too scripted, even by the standards of storytelling that White has inspired. The crowd hushed in anticipation of another command performance. White sped down the hill and crested the leading edge of the massive halfpipe and began what was sure to be a monumental run. And that is when it happened — a hard landing here, a gasp-inducing bobble there, the dominance of the world’s greatest halfpipe snowboarder slipping away with each diagonal weave downhill. White would end up in fourth, a placing probably higher than he deserved, ceding the Olympic throne to someone else for the first time since 2002.
Source: The New York Times
Well, shit happens.
Dang that sucks
so the legend falls only to get up stronger
wasn't he complaining about the halfpipe a couple days ago calling it "dangerous"?
It's the hair
wasn't he complaining about the halfpipe a couple days ago calling it "dangerous"?
That was the slopestyle. It seems like almost everyone who attempts that course falls. No wonder it's so controversial.
everyone loses sometimes
That was the slopestyle. It seems like almost everything who attempts that course falls. No wonder it's so controversial.
Sochi is turning out to be a bigger joke than I imagined
It seems like almost everything who attempts that course falls.
You have to be joking
That was the slopestyle. It seems like almost everyone who attempts that course falls. No wonder it's so controversial.
Apparently some athletes had the same complaints about the half pipe being of poor quality. The main problem is the heat in Sochi currently. A lot of the snow is turning to slush, or it's becoming abnormally hard because of artificial methods being used to prevent melting.

Damn, he skipped the X Games for this seasons' winter olympics too.
Yeah. Somethings pretty suspicious if he gets 4th place when his previous record is this.
Yeah. Somethings pretty suspicious if he gets 4th place when his previous record is this.
If anything it's the opposite. The judges know he brings in viewers, and thus revenue. If he isn't doing so well and some other guy the average viewer may not have heard of is, then said viewer is supposedly more likely to stop watching. Now obviously this is different at the Olympics, but the X-Games and Dew tour or pretty much driven on sponsorship. His perfect score in the X-games a year or two ago implied he had a perfect run, while in reality he dragged his hand on one of his landings, but they gave it too him anyways which could cause issues with judging in the future as to what truly is perfect. tl;dr he's past his peak, 4th is something to expect from someone who has been competing for a decade
It's the new hairstyle, obviously. RIP Flying Tomato.

I'm going to burn my copy of shaun white snowboarding once and for all
