Top Gear could have continued while Jeremy Clarkson was suspended – but James May and Richard Hammond refused to do the show without him.
A BBC executive revealed •discussions were held about putting out the final few episodes with mainly recorded segments and the two co-stars filming the studio parts.
But the source said: "They didn’t want to do it without Jeremy so the talks didn’t get off the ground. There is a feeling that it is all of them or none of them."

I do hope those episodes are shown at some point, would really suck otherwise.
I'm sure the fans would have felt uncomfortable with Clarkson.
Bros before shows.
so cool they're practically guaranteed another show on another network if bbc drops them

I want Top Gear to go elsewhere, no more trying to be politically correct all the time, we can have full on unadulterated top gear all the time
Good good good. Top Gear just doesn't work if one of them isn't there.
I'm sure the fans would have felt uncomfortable with Clarkson.
I was thinking, what the hell, they really wouldn't? Then I realized I put "with Clarkson" instead of "without Clarkson". Whoops!

Dont think the beeb is that suicidal to the point of dropping Top Gear. It is their most remunerative show and dropping it would mean losing milllions of viewers around the world.

Its the BBC they've axed show over far far less than this.

Top Gear pulls in more views than the US has citizens. The Beeb would be monumentally stupid to cancel TG over this.

Might want to double check your numbers there..

BBC isn't funded by adverts though, so viewer numbers don't really mean shit, more or less viewers doesn't get them any more or less funding.
Another Mirror article that reads like an anti-Top Gear/Clarkson piece.
On BBC America they're running one of the DVD specials in the show's place. Perfext Road Trip 2, I think.

Only in Britian. This is a worldwide show that commands substantial viewership in countries where adverts do pay the bills. Not only that, but having a show that pulls in that many viewers is gonna keep people paying for TV licenses in Britain, which does fund the Beeb.
They'd be stupid to cancel TG over this, simple as that.

So an hour show can become an hour show with 20 minutes of adverts?

Netflix should pick it up.

Broadcasters in other countries buy the rights to show it from the BBC, I wouldn't be surprised if that is their main source of income when it comes to Top Gear, but I don't actually have the numbers so don't take my word for that.

In 2010, Top Gear pulled in £30m for BBC Worldwide, apparently.

No its funded by (amongst other things) BBC World, Top Gear pulls in a shit load of money for BBC World. So they do need to take that into account when it comes to budgeting.

Wikipedia says "The programme has an estimated 750 million viewers a day as of 2013 September, making it the most watched show worldwide."
That's more than twice the population of the USA.

Kinda surprised how Business Insider even reports it as the greatest show on TV.
Also a world record

James apparently denied this :v:
Meanwhile James May has denied reports that he and Richard Hammond refused to film the three remaining episodes of the current series of Top Gear without Clarkson.
He said: "It's not true. No-one has ever asked me if I was going to do it, there was never any suggestion that we were going to do it. So I've never had an opportunity to refuse to do it.
"I haven't spoke to anybody about it, it's completely new to me - I don't know where it's come from."
