• Movie industry buries report proving pirates are great consumers

[release]The movie and music industry seem hell bent on portraying pirates as criminals and parasites who cost both industries billions of dollars in lost sales. In order to prove this fact a number of studies are commissioned to help demonstrate the effect a pirate has on sales of entertainment. The problem with this approach is that it has been found to be biased towards portraying pirates as the movie industry wants them to be seen, rather than presenting the facts. A great example of this has been discovered by the German-language politics and media website Telepolis. GfK Group is one of the largest market research companies in the world and is often used by the movie industry to carry out research and studies into piracy. Talking to a source within GfK who wished to remain anonymous, Telepolis found that a recent study looking at pirates and their purchasing activities found them to be almost the complete opposite of the criminal parasites the entertainment industry want them to be. The study states that it is much more typical for a pirate to download an illegal copy of a movie to try it before purchasing. They are also found to purchase more DVDs than the average consumer, and they visit the movie theater more, especially for opening weekend releases which typically cost more to attend. The conclusion of the study is that movie pirates are generally more interested in film and therefore spend more money and invest more time in it. In other words, they make up some of the movie industries best customers. Unfortunately, we will never get to read the official version of the study as the unnamed client who paid for it to be created has decided it should not see a release. The reason given for shelving it was that the contents proved “unpleasant.” The revelation that this study exists has come following a big raid on European video streaming site Kino.to last month. 250 police raided data centers and homes across Germany, Spain, France, and the Netherlands managing to arrest 12 people in the process. Those 12, plus the 4 million visitors a day to the site could now be thought of as core consumers the movie industry needs, but I assume the pararsite criminal tag will be used instead. This is by no means the only evidence that piracy isn’t as detrimental as those lobbying against it portray it to be. Independent research reported early this year found anime piracy and streaming in Japan increased DVD sales.[/release] Hahahahha [Source]
Personally, if the movie is good enough to watch again I always buy it, I feel like im just letting good movies get sale while my torrented copies of terrible movies like the warriors way stay away from my wallet
so how exactly are they losing money from sales that don't exist
terrible movies like the warriors
Anyway, not surprised by this.
so how exactly are they losing money from sales that don't exist
They're "potentially" losing money from "potential" sales.
and im potentially going to murder them for them potentially being corrupt fucks.
I usually see the movies I end up getting while they are in theaters then I torrent them while I download ones that are either something I wouldn't pay for anyway or I don't know are good and end up buying those. This happened with fight club based on the name thought it would be shit was amazed after being torrented and bought it.
Reminds me of the whole game industry and demo ordeal. If people can't try it out for free legally or the demo is severely gimped, then they're either not gonna buy it or they're gonna :yarr: it. Reviews by some potentially bribed people isn't gonna cut it today.
so how exactly are they losing money from sales that don't exist
They don't, but they like to pretend that they do.
Anyway, not surprised by this.
He meant The Warriors Way I think.
I use torrents as a demo for movies. If it's a good movie, I will buy it. Simple as that.
Independent research reported early this year found anime piracy and streaming in Japan increased DVD sales.
Makes sense. I mean someone can't buy expensive anime action figures and other nerdy things if they haven't seen the anime.
I just find it much nice to own a DVD, I dunno It just feels cool having a stack of DVD's.
How do they profit from this? If they make money of pirates wouldn't it make sense to embrace that?
lol irony
There would only be a very small number of people who 'would' buy the film but then pirate it. Mostly, people who pirate films wouldn't have bought it anyway so there is no 'lost' sale, as it was never going to happen to begin with. If anything, pirates help films get extra popularity, and since some of them buy it anyway it's a win/win situation.
I think this was pretty obvious, this just proves that film companies where using it as a reason to get sue money.
so how exactly are they losing money from sales that don't exist
They believe this because they're either ignorant, closed minded, or have really great imaginations.
They're "potentially" losing money from "potentional" sales.
It is also a "possibility" that they "May" lose them. "POSSIBLY" *hint hint*
They only lose sales if the movie sucks balls. And if it sucks balls, they don't deserve any money.
it's ignorant to say that piracy doesn't at least hurt the industry, but it isn't as much (it's a very small margin) as they project it to be
they make so much money that if even 25% of sales were 'LOST' to 'piracy' they would still make a lot of money. It doesn't do shit, and honestly, I wish they made less money, that way they have more people working for their true love of directing and put their hearts into it because its a passion for them, not just money.
Youd think the movie industry would go "Hey, pirates are a better source of money than normal people", stop shitting all over pirates, and then see if their revenues would go up
Leak the report please.
