• Just about every game tends to lag or stutter

As the title says, any game I play lags or stutters for around 10 or so seconds before going back to normal. It's really becoming annoying when I try to play TF2 or STALKER, and I can't figure out how to fix it. It isn't the games themselves, they were running fine on low settings around a few months back, so something recent must be causing the problem. But even Half-Life stutters for a few moments before going back to normal, and I'm guessing it must not have to do with the graphics. If anyone knows anything about this, I'd really appreciate the help. If any information is needed, please ask, I want to get this fixed ASAP.
Possibly a program using a lot of CPU in the background when the stuttering is happening. Try running the game in a window and having task manager open next to it, and see if the CPU usage spikes when the stuttering occurs
I'll try that, thanks. Also, I noticed that Steam uses a lot of CPU randomly, and mostly after starting or closing a game. Is it supposed to be like that?
It will use a lot of CPU when starting and closing, but it shouldn't do when you're actually playing a game unless steam is downloading in the background
Ok, so other than TF2 itself, there was no real CPU usage on anything else going on. Now, did you want me to check CPU or Physical Memory? Because I honestly don't know much about this stuff.
Press ctrl+shift+esc the CPU usage is a percentage value at the bottom of this the task manager. See if it spikes wile the game is lagging.
Ok, thanks. I'll check that out as soon as I can Ryder.
When I get in game, CPU Usage spikes to 100% and stays there.
Is it the actual game process which is using the whole 100%?
It seems to vary. When I get into TF2, it maxes out CPU, when I get into STALKER, it maxes out physical memory but leaves a lot of CPU. For whatever reason, I'm thinking something randomly steals either a lot of CPU or memory at once, forcing the entire thing to slow down. I'm not sure, seeing as though I know almost jack squat about hardware and its workings.
It would be really nice if you could tell us what specs your computer where. Download Speccy and post screenshot of that.
This started happening to me yesterday. Doneeh, have you updated your graphic card drivers to the GeForce 280.19 Driver? I'm thinking that might be a cause. I'm not sure why it would cause the CPU to spike though. It seemed to start once I installed that. I'm thinking about rolling back here pretty soon to see if thats the cause. The lag for me happens every five to ten minutes. It doesn't last long, maybe 10-15 seconds? I do hear my video card fan get quieter when the lag spikes occur. This happens in GTA 4 and BF3 Alpha. If I minimize the game and reopen it, It fixes the lag.
