Children should be banned from trying on WW1 gas masks - instead they should be destroyed

Schools should not let children touch or try on wartime helmets and gas masks as they may contain asbestos, says updated advice.
Instead they should be double-bagged and destroyed or made safe if they are not clearly shown to be asbestos free, says the Health and Safety Executive.
Historians say destroying these relics would be "a disaster".

Thought the title meant the children should be destroyed.
the gas masks or the children
damnit

You may be on to something actually, destroy the children then we get to keep our WW1 gasmasks
I agree with the children but destroying WWI gas masks instead of making them safe or keeping them away from people is fucking stupid. Here, let me just go melt down all the medieval swords and armor because they might fall and hurt somebody.
Then don't let the kids put the damn masks on! They are dangerous, AND they are historical artifacts. Not only would they give the kids the asbestos poisonings, but it also sullies the purity and condition of the masks by letting them be touched by grotty little oily shrimps.

*Sigh* if only me and my internet forum friends could wear our cool gas masks and not these fucking stupid children
Solution: don't let children near the authentic masks, produce non-working replicas just for education purposes.
GP-5 is better.
Oh man I tried on one of those in history class
I'm going to die...
oh come all we all know what they're gonna pick.
they need gasmasks for their fetishes.
Also: Doctor Who games.
"Are you my mommy?"
Make replicas or something? Lets destroy history because it might be dangerous. Its not like an unexploded grenade or the likes of a bomb!
So those children can grow up, become historians, and then be angered by the fact that pieces of our history were destroyed instead of just stored somewhere else responsibly.
Obligatory 10% of facepunch will suffer the effects from asbestos poisoning
Solution: don't let children near the authentic masks, produce non-working replicas just for education purposes.
They don't even really need to be replicas. Just empty out the filters like airsofters and facepunch members do.
Facepunchers and STALKER players are gonna be pissed if they destroy those masks.
GP-5 is better.
Nah, they don't look that cool
GP-5 is better.
your dumb cause the GP 5 filters are either asbestos or charcoal filled.
best solution, fucking toss the filters the masks themselves are fine.
the gas masks or the children

You can always create another minion. Save the gasmasks!
Instead of destroying shit why not just give it to a museum and they can make it safe and then show it off.
the gas masks or the children

We can make more kids, but WW1 Gas masks? Nah.

This is stupid and paranoid.
• The amount and duration of exposure - the more you are exposed to asbestos and the more fibers that enter your body, the more likely you are to develop asbestos related problems. The vast majority of people who have contracted these diseases were routinely exposed well above permissible exposure limits.

When left intact and undisturbed, asbestos containing materials do not pose a health risk to people working or living in buildings. Asbestos containing material is not generally considered to be harmful unless it is releasing dust or fibers into the air where they can be inhaled or ingested. Many of the fibers will become trapped in the mucous membranes of the nose and throat where they can then be removed, but some may pass deep into the lungs, or, if swallowed, into the digestive tract.
Asbestos is hazardous when it is friable. The term "friable" means that the asbestos is easily crumbled by hand, releasing fibers into the air. Sprayed on asbestos insulation is highly friable. Asbestos floor tile is not
Putting on a gasmask that contains some asbestos isn't going to kill you, sorry to ruin your day.
GP-5 is better.
yeah dude i'm wearing mine right now! im sure you can feel me on that!
It's quite clear how much that Britain is turning into a huge nanny/police state. Really glad i don't live there.
I actually have an old WWI gas mask with a bunch of other militaria.
Destroying these things would be flat out retarded, you are destroying relics of days gone by.

and yes, i am a true and pure blooded facepuncher, i have more than one gas mask.

I don't think they can be made safe due to where the asbestos is. There is of course no reason not to just put them on display and let people look at them, they don't need to be destroyed.

There are a lot of myths involving asbestos, some people think just having it in your house is going to kill you. As you say its fine unless its disturbed and flying around the air.
That said, I was a bit wary when I accidently visited the largest asbestos mine in the world (or was it Europe? Cannot remember).
i use my gas masks for self defense
honestly non-american posters just dont get american gas mask culture
need to be able to breath in the event of a sudden soviet gassing
Destroying history over something like this is stupidly wrong. Ban them from wearing them okay, but destroying the masks is just wrong.

Just for the sake of argument, would there really be any irreversible loss of knowledge by destroying these? I understand that they're cool to have around, but historians acting like it's the end of the world might be overreacting. That said I don't see a reason to destroy them all.
