We're going to remove the payment feature from the Skyrim workshop. For anyone who spent money on a mod, we'll be refunding you the complete amount. We talked to the team at Bethesda and they agree.
We've done this because it's clear we didn't understand exactly what we were doing. We've been shipping many features over the years aimed at allowing community creators to receive a share of the rewards, and in the past, they've been received well. It's obvious now that this case is different.
To help you understand why we thought this was a good idea, our main goals were to allow mod makers the opportunity to work on their mods full time if they wanted to, and to encourage developers to provide better support to their mod communities. We thought this would result in better mods for everyone, both free & paid. We wanted more great mods becoming great products, like Dota, Counter-strike, DayZ, and Killing Floor, and we wanted that to happen organically for any mod maker who wanted to take a shot at it.
VICTORY!!!
thank god
Just make it so it's donations only. Is it really that hard?
That didn't take long, though it shouldn't of happened in the first place.
I was fairly certain they would pull the plug on this, and i'm glad they did.
I was never against it, but I can agree the implementation + presentation was horrid. suddently implementing the feature without any sort of announcement a week or so beforehand was a bad move on its own, and 25% is way too small, maybe 50%-75% would have been more fair.
other than that, though, I would welcome a comeback gladly.
Can people like valve again now
glad that's over
I would have much preferred if they fixed the problems with it like the revenue split and the poor moderation but I guess if they're not willing to put the effort and negotiation into fixing those problems it's better they remove it
And here I was preparing to migrate to GOG because it would just get worse.
still stupid for having done it anyway and I'm sure many people have lost big trust in them for it
I'm just peeved they folded and kinda acting just a tiny bit childish. I mean the idea was good, somewhat. All they had to do was make it so that it's donations only. But instead they went the "my way or no way" route.
Jesus Christ this was literally the most autistic idea ever, I understand Garry's point on the matter but I'm pretty sure Garry didn't just make a shitty half working badly textured armor set to get him his millionaire status. Garry put in some real work and came out on the other side with an original and interesting idea, that is how you should get your money. Now when they take this system and put out some real MEATY MEAT FILLED MODS, I would be willing to cast out a few bucks.
About damn time.
Keep on an eye on Valve though, they'll likely try to pull this stunt again in the future when our backs are turned.
can't wait for the internet to go back to fanboying Valve hard like crazy.
Anyway, this is good news. Paid Mods was a terrible idea. Donations are a fine thing, but modding has always been about community, not a paycheck.

Call me crazy, but I'm still wary. Just because they've realized their mistake today doesn't mean they won't make more tomorrow. It's our job as consumers to keep them in check, and that requires us to keep a level head.
huh, I guess my cynical side was wrong. I was absolutely, 100% convinced this was here to stay.
Especially after Gabe's emergency AMA, that really set in lots of FUD about the whole thing.

Yeah mod developers don't deserve money. We better keep them and valve in line...
In an era where it feels like companies, especially game companies, do whatever dirty shit they have to do in order to get their profits, stomp all over us and fuck us in the ass, it's nice that we actually got them to listen for once
this was fucking stupid of Valve and Bethesda, and I still fault them fully for trying this, BUT
We've done this because it's clear we didn't understand exactly what we were doing
major props for this line right here
a game company actually admitting they made a mistake, fucking incredible

You've dabbled with forces beyond all reason and control

The elderscrolls modding community.
Counter Terrorists Win.
Wonder if Valve will still be hated to this degree after this.

I'll consider it once valve stops this whole "Making massive changes with no prior announcement" thing they seem real fond of as of late.

Mod developers DO deserve some money but this system was fucked from the beginning, did you even see the shit that was on the paid mods list? They at least could had gotten good mod makers on board for this stunt, make people give it chance but no they gave us a shit hand to choose from.

This reaction has happened with Valve in the past, like with the BBB failure rating thing.
we shouldn't be giving them props for admitting their mistakes and lackluster communication skills, until something is actually done to remedy it.
You would think, given all their recent fuckups, we'd have stopped putting them on a pedestal above other companies.
I mean holy fuck, I bet a billion big smackaroos they were going to try and enforce this shit with Fallout 4 had it stayed.
They should have made it a donation button in the first place.

Start making some video games and we'll talk.
They actually said sorry?
If same thing doesnt come back in a month with 35% instead of 25% share I am all for it.
I can understand why they tried to encourage the modding community, most of valves flagship games. TF2, Counter strike, Dota2 are all made off mods. heck their chief AI designers for Half-Life were recruited from the quake modding community, valve benefits from mods... and they can make a quick buck in the process which any company wants.
But thank god they buckled, and they didn't even pull the mass effect "Artistic vision" excuse, they gave it a couple days to see if it was just hyperbole and when it wasn't looking like it even Robin "Hatmiester" Walker was talking about how "This might not work and we should be prepared to make changes if it does not."
Sure, yes modders work hard and hard work deserves reward but we need a better system to reward good modders.
