• Really inconsistent connection

Okay, so this has been bothering me for a while. Sometimes when I'm on the computer, the connection will just drop and not come back unless I restart the modem and router or just wait it out. On some days, I can only connect for twenty minutes at a time, but on some days, my connection is fine. Also, it seems I can only go on my computer or go on Xbox Live; my connection is apparently unable to support both, even though my Xbox is directly wired to my router, and my computer is receiving a wireless signal. So, I'm not looking for a precise solution, but does anyone have any general tips to improve my internet consistency? EDIT: Basically, my internet works fine when one device is connected to it. But, I could be online on my laptop, and then my brother will turn on his laptop and neither of us can get on. The same happens when I turn on my Xbox.
Without troubleshooting further and making assumptions all the way - it sounds like your router is either dying or it's a bag of shit. What model is it? I've seen numerous flaky connections sorted by getting proper networking hardware instead of the shit ISPs send out these days. Alternatively it's an issue with the connection itself, but this is something you will need to work with your ISP to solve.

Wait, OP, is the connection dropping betwen your PC and the router, or your router and the internet? i.e. if your connection 'drops' can you still use your xbox?
I'm pretty sure you can change settings on your ISP account and router to make your router pickier about the data packs it recieves, so your net would slow down, but it would stay up more. Mine's set to something like 6.0dB, I don't know the finer points of how it works though. Less picky = faster net, more dropouts (My ISP recommends this for gamers who need top speed internet) Pickier = slower net, more stable internet [editline]10:24PM[/editline] Plus what Liquid_phase said... if your net itself is dropping out, listen to me. If it's your connection from computer to router, disregard this.

Of course that's assuming the dude on the help desk knows wtf you're talking about...!
I'm with Adam Internet in Australia, the only time I've called their help desk they've been pretty smart and helpful.
I'm with Adam Internet in Australia, the only time I've called their help desk they've been pretty smart and helpful.
Perhaps they could send a bunch over to train the likes of BT over here, I've phoned BT before trying to get an issue on my fathers connection sorted and it took me days of countless phone calls and threats to go to ofcom before they would finally put me in contact with someone with a clue. Besides, it would be great to hear an ozzy voice rather than someone I can't understand (I'll stop there in case I offend someone).
Wait, OP, is the connection dropping betwen your PC and the router, or your router and the internet? i.e. if your connection 'drops' can you still use your xbox?
The connection is dropping between the router and the internet. Constantly, I would be online and suddenly I have no internet access, but I'm still connected to the router.

There are a number of things your ISP can do to increase stability (at the expense of ping and/or sync speed).
How old is your house? I think my friend knew someone who had this internet, rats ate through some wiring or something..
How old is your house? I think my friend knew someone who had this internet, rats ate through some wiring or something..
Sorry, but I just have to... Aww...rats.
How old is your house? So rats are a possibility. heating vent...heat + wires *can* = failed wires.
