Jennifer Mitts, 43, of Hixson taught at Red Bank High School for 8 years. She has been described as a popular English teacher who at one point won WDEF's Golden Apple Award. But on March 14th, the popular teacher said she faced one of the toughest days of her life. It was the day she was called into office where she was met by Principal Justin Robertson and Ava Warren from the human resource department. Mitts said they told her she should not have taken the student because it's a liability issue. "They said you realize what this means don't you and I asked what. They said you have a choice," she said. Mitts went on to say they asked her if she knew what that choice was. She said her reply was resign or be fired. "They said correct. Then they asked me what it's going to be. They told me that before I made up my mind, if I'm fired, I'll never work as a teacher ever again. They also said if I resign I could teach in other counties but not Hamilton County and still be able to salvage my teaching career," said the former teacher. She said she was forced to resign. "I actually wasn't even going to be the one to take her to the doctor. Another teacher told me about the situation and said the school nurse think she has pneumonia and I think we need to take her to the doctor." Mitts said. Mitt's said she told the other teacher that she didn't mind doing it. She eventually took the student to the doctor and even paid the medial bill with her own money. "I was not offered a suspension. That is a total lie. Fabrication," Mitts said.

Another strike against Mitts was in her personnel file. She has received several warnings, reprimands and even a 5-day suspension for other incidents that raised administrative red flags. There was even a letter from a school administrator explaining how her good intentions were putting the district in jeopardy of a potential lawsuit. "It's a liability issue. It's an issue of insubordination after doing something you were officially warned not to do and doing it again. It's an issue of neglect of duty because the classroom was left unattended. There's several issues," Stewart said.
*Note, I misread the story. The last girl she took to the hospital was pregnant, not this one.
Man, fuck schools and their bullshit must-follow policies
Insubordination because of something she does in her personal life? Right...
Insubordination because of something she does in her personal life? Right...
Not really personal when it was done on School hours. It says in the article that she left her class to deal with this, making her and thus the school liable if one of the students did something bad. Teachers have brains, I would assume that she would have gotten someone to supervise the students, article says otherwise. It still sounds like the bullshit of treating education like a business, and always following by the book.
Teacher suddenly having to leave the class and letting you to do what you want for the rest of it is like unexpected Christmas eve, tho.
It's weird how people and institutions live in a perpetual fear of lawsuits, apparently. How did society turn out in such a fashion?
It's weird how people and institutions live in a perpetual fear of lawsuits, apparently. How did society turn out in such a fashion?
People with good intentions making a system to try to be fair to everybody and then people who don't give a shit about anybody but themselves paying other people lots of money to figure out how to exploit the shit out of it, and then everybody else noticing and deciding to take advantage of it.
It's weird how people and institutions live in a perpetual fear of lawsuits, apparently. How did society turn out in such a fashion?
Because they do get sued all the time, probably.
Teacher suddenly having to leave the class and letting you to do what you want for the rest of it is like unexpected Christmas eve, tho.
Back when that happened, our class would just play a game of celebrity heads..
It seems that she had a habit of leaving the classroom unattended, which really shouldn't be much of a problem in high school but if the school requires that an instructor is needed to supervise the class while she's away, then she should indeed have done that. Though the other concern of the matter was a lawsuit, which honestly seems like backpedaling to justify the forced resignation.
"First of all, people have been asking why you have a 20-year old student in your class. She is from a another country and she started school late. Her parents are not in the country. She wants a high school diploma," Mitts said.
Who the fuck were they going to be sued by? Parents aren't in the country, so the student would be a "legal guardian" unto themselves. And I doubt that the student didn't consent being driven to the doctor.
"You're being fired for insubordination. You're not supposed to care about or help your students."
"You're being fired for insubordination. You're not supposed to care about or help your students."
Like helping and caring about the other students too? She could have called the school nurse, or sent her down to the nurse. She would have been sent to the doctor from there, then she could have vistied and payed the bills.
Where is bad reading when you need it :v:
You sure got me, I mean it is not like there is a service that provides emergency medical service. You know the kind that can take care of a sick person, while transporting them to the ER. I know why don't you tell me what the teacher could have done if the student stopped breathing on the ride to the ER. Something that can be as life threatening as pneumonia, tge achool did the right thing geting rid of her. That student dies in tge car of this theacher tge school us held accountable for he inaction to get EMS involved.
It's weird how people and institutions live in a perpetual fear of lawsuits, apparently. How did society turn out in such a fashion?
Pretty much because of "no win, no fee" style of litigation.
So basically someone got screwed over for doing something good. That's nothing new unfortunately.

Not $100. $1000.
