• What Carmack actually said about Linux
First, here’s what he didn’t say: Linux development is another story altogether. Even though Valve is now actively pursuing the Linux market, iD has been there before, and just has not seen positive results. Remember how many past titles from iD actually ran on Linux, and for how long these were supported? John says that Linux development simply does not pay the bills. It creates goodwill among the Linux crowd, but that is about it. I watched Carmack’s keynote ... all three hours and thirty-six minutes of it. Twice. And took notes. The first thing that needs to be said about the above quote is it’s actually by Josh Walrath, Managing Editor of PC Perspective, not Carmack. The only thing Carmack said about Linux was this: Not nearly as many people are interested in paying for games on the platform. That’s it. No mention of "goodwill", a lack of "positive results" or "paying the bills". The only mention of "past titles" was his reference to the fact that Linux "just hasn't carried its weight compared to the mac"... on Quake Live, which was actually an abysmal failure for reasons entirely unrelated to Linux. In other words Linux accounts for comparatively fewer sales of iD's games. Fewer, not "none", not a total lack of "positive results", not Linux isn't "paying the bills", and not "we're going bankrupt because of Linux". That's just pure hyperbole. Moreover, at no point did Carmack explicitly state nor even imply that iD were abandoning Linux, as many seem to have inferred from that article.
Source
I hadn't heard about this
Well no shit Linux is the minority when compared to OS X and windows
I also find it funny to think you can compare Steam coming to Linux (and Gabe commenting he wants all 2500 Steam games running on it) to iD porting a few FPS games
Thing is the Linux market 5 years ago (or hell, even 3) was considerately smaller than what it is today. It's a growing market and one which I think could have some major rewards for those willing to dabble in it.

The only thing I'd use linux for is if I wanted to customize the source to suit me tbh
I prefer Linux for general productivity. Right now I'm using Windows just so that I can get good game screenshots for my wiki.

There's a lot of things that'll determine linux's success in the future, and although it's hard to say what'll happen I'd love for it to grow into a more publicly used platform.
Well no shit Linux is the minority when compared to OS X and windows
With the latest version of windows being what it is, who can blame Valve?
With the latest version of windows being what it is, who can blame Valve?
Stop posting like a tool, really. You've been doing nothing You've been taking shots at windows 8 all you can, yet you say that you simply want people to agree with your viewpoint.
Windows 8 isn't that bad. I just sincerely hope that the Metro start menu can be scrolled through.
Windows 8 isn't that bad. I just sincerely hope that the Metro start menu can be scrolled through.
Ehh, you can?
The linux market is massive if you count Android.
The linux market is massive if you count Android.
Never thought of that. All the little Indie games could very well run on Android if Google implements the controler and screen connection they proposed a few months ago.
Well no shit. I'm not gonna say Linux users are cheapskates but linux users have never really had much videogame support, and I don't think the community as it is has having that support as a high priority. And I don't even know if there's software for Linux that is paid and doesn't have a well-recieved free and open-source counterpart.
Look, I'm sorry it bothers you.
If you're sorry then why are you putting it up in the first place?
I will gladly pay for open source software as it tends to work better if I can compile it and fit it in to my system.
I won't, I'll just download the source somewhere and remove any licensing popups etc.
I won't, I'll just download the source somewhere and remove any licensing popups etc.
Well if you want to pirate things, that's your decision.
Look, I'm sorry it bothers you.
Hey, I'm agaisnt the fact that people began to shat all over the Windows 8 thread because of your posts, while you actually became much more reasonable for a short period of time. I'm just sad to see that you reverted to your earlier, much shittier, posting habbits so fast. I even tried to help you getting the old start menu back (or rather Panda X had provided a solution which I linked to), since you asked for it. Please just stop making shitty useless posts about how much you hate Windows 8, it's tiring and you're not gonna earn anything from it.
Well if you want to pirate things, that's your decision.
It isn't piracy if I remove the EULA from the sourcecode.
It isn't piracy if I remove the EULA from the sourcecode.
Ehh, I'm pretty darn sure that it is.
It isn't piracy if I remove the EULA from the sourcecode.
You can remove EULAs from closed source programs too, is that still piracy?
You can remove EULAs from closed source programs too, is that still piracy?
Thats reverse engineering, you're already breaking the law in some countries so who cares?
If Windows becomes a completely closed platform in the future and interesting indie games end up only being on Linux I will end up using it
If Windows becomes a completely closed platform in the future and interesting indie games end up only being on Linux I will end up using it
Windows is already closed source? You mean like on iOS or what? I really don't think that is happening, other than on the RT platform.
It isn't piracy if I remove the EULA from the sourcecode.
You are an idiot. Access to the source doesn't mean you can do what you like.
You are an idiot. Access to the source doesn't mean you can do what you like.
It does if you live in the Netherlands, and if you don't.. who is going to stop you? So let me turn your own words against you, "You are an idiot".
