Here's whats included: - Smart DJ on ZuneHD (Think Genius for iPod) - Native AVI and XVID support - Marketplace on TV-Out - "Picks" on-device - Overall performance increases. Faster thumbnail loading and smoother animations. - Faster, better browser. Large web pages that would previously have crashed the browser now load, you can zoom in further on images without blurring, and tap-to-zoom works better. - You can now sort your favorites by date added or alphabetically. - It now warns you that deleting your browser history takes forever. - In artist view, you can now play all albums or songs, or add them to now playing. - In the marketplace, you can see more than 3 of an artist’s top songs. - Playlists now have a transparent background in Quickplay. - You can re-name favorites in the browser. - You can save images or pictures of entire web pages to the device via the browser. - Accelerometer use in the browser is even faster (didn’t think it was possible), again rotating near instantly with the movement. - App exit transitions are now vaguely similar to iPhone OS’s. - Fonts in the network viewer are now in the correct capitalization. - When transitioning from the Music, Videos, Pictures, Marketplace, Social, Podcasts, and Apps main menus to the universal main menu, the previous stutters in the transitions are now much less pronounced and much smoother. - Overall scrolling performance has less stitches and as noted above, thumbnails of pretty much anything load faster. - In-App performance: Twitter runs overall much smoother, but there are still performance hitches. Facebook is also much smoother and scrolling has less stutter. Horizontal transitions are also faster and smoother as well. - The zune can take screenshots in the browser. - No more ads before games. - I also noticed that the Zune will use other background pictures for the artist and is no longer one background picture - Can now connect to networks with hidden SSID. Comes up as "Hidden Network" and lets you define the SSID once you select it. - Still no WPA2 or WPA Enterprise support (unconfirmed some say this is working _ don’t have it so I can’t verify it) Bolded the changed that I think stand out the most. To get the update simply start the zune software with the device plugged in.
FINALLY! Is it out yet?
It's out now. Apparently the Smart DJ on the zune works with the zunepass, so it'll automatically download/stream songs onto your zune if you have the zune pass ($15/mo subscription to use the entire music library on zune marketplace). So say your playing a certain song with smart DJ and have the zune pass with the WiFi enabled.. it'll automatically stream/download the music from the marketplace to the playlist if it fits the style of the artist along with using your own collection. Like pandora on the go! Assuming you're near a wifi network. Otherwise it's pandora-using-only-your-collection on the go.
This is relevant to my interests.
Makes me wish I still had a Zune.
They still don't have more apps. They still need to update the regular zune firmware.
They still need to sell this in the UK. :(
They still don't have more apps. But I really do give it to microsoft for fucking supporting the avi format. No portable media players really support it and it is so widely used that it should be so they made a great decision on that.
On a side note, they also announced the Zune HD 64gb for $349.99. Ridiculously priced, but for some, money isn't an issue. On topic, however, I just updated my Zune HD with the new firmware, and I am digging the Smart DJ straight from my Zune. It makes everything much more simple to discover new music.
It's still $50 cheaper than the ipod touch 64gb
Makes me want to get a Zune.
Really want an update to add at least twitter to the normal zune. 'course 4gb sucks for holding tons of music anyhow, might upgrade
Is the marketplace in the UK yet?
Is the marketplace in the UK yet?
Sadly not, I would get a Zune pass in a heartbeat. I really like how the artist background changes when you change song now, this device is intended for music lovers first and foremost.
Is the marketplace in the UK yet?
http://www.zunepassanywhere.com It's $10 more than what it is in the US but it is still worth it if you like a wide variety of music. And the zune pass is REALLY great on the HD which has a built in marketplace, and the new smart DJ will automatically stream music from the marketplace on your zune too if you have a zune pass. As long as you are in a wifi zone of course. When signing up just use a US email and information and you can use the marketplace... assuming you have a US credit card/prepaid/etc. But if you use the above link you can download the whole marketplace for $25/mo anywhere in addition to keeping 10 songs per month you download for keeps (DRM free, normally the unlimited music you download with zune pass is limited to up to 3 zunes only and 3 computer too I think).
- Native AVI and XVID support
Finally yes! [editline]08:54PM[/editline] No more converting all my videos

Or does the zune pass do different things? [editline]01:14PM[/editline]
Sadly not, I would get a Zune pass in a heartbeat. Same, as soon as I work it out, I dun gettit. I mean, do you HAVE to have an american account or what?
Same, as soon as I work it out, I dun gettit. I mean, do you HAVE to have an american account or what?
Zune pass anywhere works through paypal. You paypal the guy on the website (who lives in the US), and he sends you a zune pass code (or a physical zune pass if you want). It uses the marketplace but the service itself doesn't actually care what country you are in other than the fact that you must purchase music using a US credit card if you want to buy music directly through the program (or if you want to get a zune pass through the program you need one too). The actual zune pass itself is region free. Actually so is all the music in the marketplace. But like I said, if you don't have an american credit card it won't work if you try and buy anything directly.
Should add a windows live messenger app. Also this makes me want one even more.

Uhh it still doesn't have AVI support for me
Maybe you need to plug it into the computer you synced it with or something. I don't have on yet so I don't know but it's probably somethin like that.
Wow. Very nice update. Loving the AVI support.

It also had DivX support, but through a 3rd party player, and the CPU was pretty lackluster so it would get choppy a lot. I stuck to MP4. But wait, the Zune doesn't have WPA2 support?! Granted, my computer's wifi card doesn't have WPA2 support, but hell, its 5 years old. You would think that all wireless devices supported WPA2 by now.
Wow. Very nice update. Loving the AVI support.
How did you get the AVI to work?
How did you get the AVI to work?
I just dragged and dropped it from the Zune software onto the Zune HD. The video was encoded in XVid.
