The move from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes will be rolled out over the next five years, starting in the second half of 2014, and affect about one-third of Canadian households. The change will not affect rural households.

“If this happens, it would be the end of an era for Canada Post,” union president Denis Lemelin said. “We recognize that Canada Post needs to change, but this is not the way.” The union has advocated for postal service expansion, including introduction of postal banking.

The cost of a stamp will also jump from $0.63 to $0.85 for bulk purchase of stamps, or $1 for individual stamps. That change comes into effect March 31, 2014. Canada Post said it is also planning to scale down its labour force by between 6,000 and 8,000 people, though it maintains it can do so through attrition, as about 15,000 employees are scheduled to retire in the coming years.
**SOURCE** FFs. That really sucks. I already use a community mailbox so it won't affect me that way, but screw that dont hike stamp prices :(
What about suburban areas?
Most modern suburbs now have community mailboxes so you can stroll down the street and find someone pried open your box and stole your NCIX package.
Most modern suburbs now have community mailboxes so you can stroll down the street and find someone pried open your box and stole your NCIX package.
People do naughty things in canada I have been deceived.
Are you trying to tell me that you aren't going to deliver anything to my door now, Canada Post? Fuck you.
People do naughty things in canada I have been deceived.
You'll fit right in at Regent Park.
Are you trying to tell me that you aren't going to deliver anything to my door now, Canada Post? Fuck you.
Like what the shit. Our house regularly gets about three massive boxes a day delivered to us. You're telling me you can fit that into a community mailbox? Fuck that.
Not their fault. Their budget (along with CBC and tons of other shit) was pretty much destroyed by Supreme Leader Harper.
Well it's a good thing just about every other parcel service is ready to take its place. Removing door-to-door delivery is honestly the most outrageous thing I've ever heard of. I'm still baffled.
There's really no difference between the Door to Door service and the community mailbox. In terms of big packages, it's the same both ways; if you are not there to accept it, it will be sent to the post office for pick up. In situations of small packages like a tablet, there is a "public" box that it gets locked in at that community box, and you will get a key in your mailbox for you to open it. Nothing to worry about fellow Canadians. [editline]11th December 2013[/editline] Of course you're expected to return that key too.
Oh well, less expensive and better private delivery services will just fill the gap.
What I don't get is why are they keeping rural delivery and abolishing urban, doesn't driving for hours in the country cost a lot? Also, before people blame Harper for this (anymore than has already been done)
Not their fault. So again, ye who will use any excuse to blame Harper for something, he had no hand in this. CP decided they need to do this because Trudeau mandated they operate without government funding in 1981, and they're doing this to fulfil that mandate.
Welp, I'm so glad the local post office location at the mall 5 minutes from my house closed a few years back and the nearest postal location is way the fuck downtown. The only people who'll deliver to this house now are DHL.
Not that it affects me but I don't understand why this works or how they're going to implement it. Maybe Canada is massively safer than where I live? Because I know for a fact if there was community boxes where I live people's shit would just get stolen all the time from it. Maybe I'm just not comprehending it right, but it seems like a real shit idea
Living in a small town all my life meant Canada post never delivered anything to my door. Me 1 canada post 0.
-words-
Actually I gotta retract my previous statement because yeah, they aren't connected really. I brought this up with my mom half an hour ago because she and my grandma used to run a country post office in Ontario until the 80's. Apparently she sees no issue with urban delivery being phased out considering the country needs it a lot more. As for Harper being a tosspot. Yeah, he's still a bag of ass.
My dad works at canada post, luckily he is retiring in i think 2 years so he'll be fine (as far as i know) but a lot of his coworkers won't be which he's pretty bummed about. I guess you could have seen this coming
Like what the shit. Our house regularly gets about three massive boxes a day delivered to us. You're telling me you can fit that into a community mailbox? Fuck that.
No you go pick it up at your post office or choose a different delivery method.
This.. sounds extremely backwards. I can't even imagine not having packages delivered to my house, we don't even HAVE post offices anymore. Sure, you can pick up things at some stores, but I'm not letting my shit get delivered there. This is absolutely mindboggling.
It's not like those lazy fucks ever bothered to deliver my packages in the first place. I swear they constantly drive up to my apartment building, stick a notice in my mailbox and leave. Every time I want a package I generally have to wait multiple days for them to "attempt" to deliver until it finally gets back to the post office for pickup.

He was on CBC last night saying that he understands what this means for Canadians, and how the government should at least discuss supporting the Canada Post. I mean, of the myriad of stupid projects the Canadian government tosses money at, this is one they actually should support, for several reasons: -Seniors who have trouble with mobility can still get their mail -Keep postal workers employed -Community mail boxes are often broken into
Oh well, less expensive and better private delivery services will just fill the gap.
Canada Post is the only one that doesn't turn square boxes into round ones. I've had good luck with Purolator but they're owned by Canada Post so
