Hey Facepunch, I have a question about physics. I was under the impression that everything is essentially energy and vibrations. That every quark, ion, gluon, etc is just a one-dimensional vibration or packet of energy. Is this true? Thanks in advance.
No.
One-dimensional? No. [editline]3rd July 2012[/editline] It's possible but not nearly provable that all particles are vibrational modes of fundamental strings, though.
The answer to your question is that matter and energy are two completely different things.
Even though these strings are one-dimensional manifolds and the vibrations are one-dimensional, higher dimensions do affect the dynamics of the strings. (strings may fold until parts of them pass through each other, and then there's a chance they may couple and break off a new particle, for instance) [editline]3rd July 2012[/editline]
The answer to your question is that matter and energy are two completely different things.
Not really.

Okay, once you remove the portion about them being one-dimensional, does my question have an answer, or is it not provable?
Okay, once you remove the portion about them being one-dimensional, does my question have an answer, or is it not provable?
As far as we know, yes. Particles in the framework of quantum field theory (part of which, quantum electrodynamics, is probably the most accurately experimentally verified theory in all physics) are seen as excitations of a quantum field.
The answer to your question is that matter and energy are two completely different things.
I think Hiroshima and Nagasaki want you to believe otherwise.
