Hey everyone;
About 10 minutes ago I was playing Far Cry 4 and my PC shut itself and opened itself again and it gave the error "Power supply surge detected". I play the game on 'Very High' settings. What is the meaning? What should I do?
My specs are:
Motherboard: ASUS Z77A
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K @ 3.4GHz (Ivy Bridge, Quad Core, LGA 1155)
RAM: GSKILL Sniper 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 500 GB + Western Digital Elements SE 1 TB
GPU: Sapphire R9 280X Vapor-X 3GB 384Bit DX11.2
Power Supply: Xigmatek Centauro 800W (80+)
It's caused by a failing power supply. Xigmatek uses fairly high-quality components in their supplies, but their cooling tends to be lackluster.
Buy a new power supply made by a well-established and trusted manufacturer, such as Seasonic, XFX, Super Flower, or Fractal Design.
Example:

Unless you're planning to use two or more high-performance graphics cards in the future, a high-quality 450W PSU with enough connectors will do just fine.
I'd recommend you to simply not use the system until the PSU's been replaced, as a dying power supply can cause serious damage to the rest of your components if you're unlucky.

LOL no they don't.
Xigmatek is about as IED as a Logisys. They sell fake rated units that are built with trash components.
OP, trash that PSU and get a quality unit from Corsiar, Cooler Master, Silverstone, EVGA or Antec.

Depends on the model

I also wouldn't recommend EVGA's power supplies

EVGA's G2 models are SuperFlower Leadex platforms, which are some of the best testing units in existence. And they're pretty affordable too.
I am probably gonna buy a PSU tomorrow. Do you guys recommend 850w or 1000w?
Both of those are far overkill. Unless you plan on putting in more than one GPU in the future, anything from a 500-600 range (being a quality unit) should be excellent.

I filled the PSU calculator and it said to me that I need 825W.
EDIT: And the "Power supply surges has been detected" error started to happen after I got the GPU. I had 7950 previously.
PSU calculators are often hilariously inaccurate.
The R9 280x has a 250W TDP
The i5-3570k is known to pull up to 150W
Give the motherboard 30-40W
Give the RAM 10W
Both drives probably 20W max
That puts you around 470W under a really heavy load. You could get away with a 550W unit or a 650W if you want a bit more breathing room. Getting an 800W+ unit is overkill and a waste of money.
This shows more proof that Xigmatek PSUs are shit, it can only handle ~50% of its rated load before failing. This is a common "feature" in cheap Chinese shit PSUs, heavily overrate your product, slap fake certifications on it and toss it out to market significantly cheaper than other units to get computer illiterate people to buy it.

Well I RMA'd my psu. If something is wrong with the psu, I will change it. I know 1000w is an overkill but it won't do any damage to PC as far as I know and would be better if I want to change any parts of my PC in the future.
But you'll lose efficiency, get a compromise 750W. It will handle 2 GPUs easy as well as whatever else you want.
Yeah, I think I will get a Cooler Master 800w then. Didn't knew Xigmatek was this bad as GiGaBiTe said.
