They include The Shard, the work of architect Renzo Piano, completed in 2012. At 87 stories, the Shard (shown at the top of the page) is the tallest skyscraper in the European Union. People who didn't want the building constructed protested that it would be a "shard of glass" tearing into the London skyline. The team behind the project embraced their adversaries, and The Shard is now the building's official name.[/quote]

Because the city council will let any old building be knocked down for shiny new crap. There's a second extreme, where you cant even get new windows, because the historians don't allow any change to the inner city buildings. And I'm talking about windows that were old when the first the habsburg monarchy was a new fangled idea.

When you say knock down any old building, you do mean the Baltic Exchange building right? The building that was damaged by an IRA bombing and couldn't be recovered, therefore remaining an abandoned building in the middle of London?

I actually love the design of these skyscrapers, they look really modern and cool.
