As an unofficial part of my orientation, I decided to take a guided walking tour of the old city. Yes, the history was fascinating. Yes, the city is beautiful. Well, most of it. Parts are not exactly my taste. But what really struck me about the tour was the sheer number of cheeky, irreverent names that Londoners give their 21st-century skyscrapers. Some of the names have clear origins. Others seem to rise up out of the collective consciousness. They include The Shard, the work of architect Renzo Piano, completed in 2012. At 87 stories, the Shard (shown at the top of the page) is the tallest skyscraper in the European Union. People who didn't want the building constructed protested that it would be a "shard of glass" tearing into the London skyline. The team behind the project embraced their adversaries, and The Shard is now the building's official name.
The Gherkin is my fav

I like the, "stealth bomber".
why is it so ugly and out of place
Because its a giant dildo in the middle of London.
why is it so ugly and out of place
I kind of like it. It grows on you trust me.
why is it so ugly and out of place
In context with the rest of the skyline, I think it fits quite nicely. [t]http://www.londonshoeshine.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/panoramic_cityscapes4.jpg[/t]
Wonder what they'd think of Dublin with The Stiffy by the Liffey... [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1b/E4324-Spire-of-Dublin.jpg[/t] The Irish have us beat on good naming schemes. Hell, look up Biffo.
why is it so ugly and out of place
Because the city council will let any old building be knocked down for shiny new crap. I give it 50 years before the Houses of Parliament are knocked down and replaced with a glass-and-concrete monstrosity with a dirty great statue of Doctor Who in the middle because some powerturd in the Guardian said "It's, like, sooooooo Briddish!"
the walkie scorchie is clearly the best, because it sounds like something that would be in one of those greentext stories with the made up british names for things
"The building also has a less family-friendly nickname." Damn straight it does. If you say you thought of a pickle first, you're lying.
From a guy with first-hand experience, it looks less like a dildo and more like a tampon :v:

Yes, that is indeed a dildo. Notice how it has far less girth than the Gherkin?
They include The Shard
Did anyone else immediately think of Mirrors Edge?

And I'm talking about windows that were old when the first the habsburg monarchy was a new fangled idea.

The building that was damaged by an IRA bombing and couldn't be recovered, therefore remaining an abandoned building in the middle of London? Yeah they definitely are powerturds.
That's a butt plug. Get it right jesus.
... wait it's not a pacifier? ohgod
Yes, that is indeed a dildo. Notice how it has far less girth than the Gherkin?
Are you suggesting they rename it 'The Bad Dragon'?
Did a google search on 'The Bad Dragon', needless to say I regret it
What's with the giant Ferris Wheel makes it look like your whole city is a local theme park everything else is neat but that wheel...

I actually love the design of these skyscrapers, they look really modern and cool.
