Hi Facepunch this is my first "thread" so please don't let me down, having said that I hope you wont judge me upon this. :) I am not a heavy gamer but I have had a mac and am currently on vista which I am show you all know is rather shoddy. I am a student but would like a relatively simple operating system, for example mac or windows 7 I do not like dell very much as I perceive them to be pretty poorly made and horrid (maybe my experiences have been worsened by having a dell with Vista) I am not ruling out dell as I no they make computers such as alienware a very good brand. I also would like to say that I have around £700-800 to play around with, I don't mind a 11" sort of screen but maybe you could point out a good DVD drive to go with it.
Thank you Facepunch
Build it.

Don't get a gaming laptop.
Ever.
Big waste of money.
Also, Vista doesn't suck.
If I were you, I'd get a computer-literate friend to help you build your own PC and save some money.
Okay, firstly thanks for responding so quick second of all, is there a way to build your own laptop?
nope
vista isn't bad
Okay, firstly thanks for responding so quick second of all, is there a way to build your own laptop?
I think there's one company that lets you build from a barebones laptop, but it's really not much different from selecting the CPU/GPU/RAM/HDD from, for example, the Dell website.
ASUS makes really nice laptops.
Dont get a laptop unless you plan on moving it around.
Asus UL30VT is a good student laptop. It can do SOME gaming too (if you get the model with the G210 chip), but it's not a strong pc for newer games. It's cheap, 13.3 inch and easy to move to classes. I recommend it, yet I don't have one.
Also good battery life.
Okay thanks Blackwater I will look into it. Also what about the HP Mini 110-1115SA 1 gb ram but i would instantly get a 2 gb?
also, for your info, the ul30 doesn't have a cd drive, ul50 and 80 do
alienware is HORRIBLE.
building a laptop costs more.
if you want to game get a desktop, if you build a desktop you save like 500$
1200$ computer for a 700$ price tag.
And you build it,which is fun.
Thank you very much I sadly found this out after getting excited about it and considering the higher price then a netbook so i am thinking more about getting a netbook then a notebook. I am also looking at HP 210 is it good does anyone have it, problems? Are HP any good? I do apologise for being so clueless i am just less well informed, which is why I have turned to you :D !
Build a desktop for gaming and power user shit, buy a netbook for general computing.
Have both for epic victories.

I bought a Dell with Vista and it's a great PC, are you sure you aren't just overcategorizing it because of one bad experience?
UL80 UL50

Vista isn't perfect but windows 7 did make it better, feels more sleek and responsive what vista should have been all along
As has been said several times throughout this thread, build it yourself.
You can end up getting something so much more powerful than what you are buying for so much cheaper.
I picked up an Intel Core i7/6GB DDR3 RAM/ATi HD RADEON 4890 with 500GB harddrive and it cost me just over £800. That would have killed my wallet to buy prebuilt...
Build it yourself, full stop.

I See two things wrong here.
1. dell
2/ prebuilt
Thank you all for the great help! I am however leaning towards the netbook way any help there?

Those animated videos of the components being slotted in and cables snapping into place is so soothing. I watched them all and actually got a semi.
Netbooks suck.
They suck at everything exept being small.
Get the asus UL50
Or an Acer Timeline series.
Building is the most satisfactory option,
because when your finished you get a rush and can't resist shouting;
"IT'S ALIIIVE!"
Okay so even the HP Mini 210 and put a 2 GB RAM and get an external DVD Drive. It still comes out a hell of a lot cheaper then any of the others suggested? I could get a 1 terabite external too?
Intel Core i7 980X + ASUS Rampage II Extreme - $1399.98
Corsair Dominator 12GB DDR3 1600 (6X2GB) - $409.99
2 x HIS Radeon HD 5970 in Xfire - $1499.98
2x Intel X-25M G2 160GB SSD in Raid 0 - $878
Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB for storage - $279.99
Enermax Galaxy EVO 1250W Power Supply - $319.99
Samsung Black 8X Blu-ray combo drive - $99.99
Lite-on 24X DVD drive - $29.99
Cooler Master ATCS 840 Black Full Tower Case - $179.99
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit OEM - $174.99
Total = $5272.89

No. Don't get a netbook as a primary, unless you want to play 10 year old games

Too bad dell's laptops are known around the world as the world's worst laptops.
That includes alienware laptops.
I know ASUS has a barebone laptop that supports a 775 socket CPU and has a mini-pcie that supports a 8800GTX
