Apple Warns Users Against Jailbreaking
Apple is warning users against jailbreaking their iPhones and iPods calling it a major source of instability, disruption of services, and other issues.
As designed by Apple, the iPhone OS ensures that the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch operate reliably. Some customers have not understood the risks of installing software that makes unauthorized modifications to the iPhone OS ("jailbreaking") on their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Customers who have installed software that makes these modifications have encountered numerous problems in the operation of their hacked iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Examples of these issues supposedly caused by jailbreaking include the following:
Device and application instability: Frequent and unexpected crashes of the device, crashes and freezes of built-in apps and third-party apps, and loss of data.
Unreliable voice and data: Dropped calls, slow or unreliable data connections, and delayed or inaccurate location data.
Disruption of services: Services such as Visual Voicemail, YouTube, Weather, and Stocks have been disrupted or no longer work on the device. Additionally, third-party apps that use the Apple Push Notification Service have had difficulty receiving notifications or received notifications that were intended for a different hacked device. Other push-based services such as MobileMe and Exchange have experienced problems synchronizing data with their respective servers.
Compromised security: Security compromises have been introduced by these modifications that could allow hackers to steal personal information, damage the device, attack the wireless network, or introduce malware or viruses.
Shortened battery life: The hacked software has caused an accelerated battery drain that shortens the operation of an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on a single battery charge.
Inability to apply future software updates: Some unauthorized modifications have caused damage to the iPhone OS that is not repairable. This can result in the hacked iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone OS update is installed.
Apple strongly cautions against installing any software that hacks the iPhone OS. It is also important to note that unauthorized modification of the iPhone OS is a violation of the iPhone end-user license agreement and because of this, Apple may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation has asked the Copyright Office to officially exempt jailbreaking from Apple's DMCA claims stating that this sort of claim is absurd. Imagine GM trying to claim that only GM could do any mechanical work on your car. You can read more about this case here.[/release]
Never ran into any issues a restore can't fix

Haha. I never encountered any of this, and I jailbroke mine about 6 months ago.
As in: If you don't understand the risks of jailbreaking don't do it. To bad so manny people are retarded and does it without even knowing what it really is.

Have you installed much? Like, ssh, ifile, lockinfo, etc.
It drains the battery way faster, and for most people push notifications stop working when jailbreaked.

Well then they get more battery life becose push nottifications drains x2 faster your battery.
Really Apple?

*removes SSH*
You could, you know, change the root password. OpenSSH is ancient and if the user does what they're supposed to do it is nearly watertight.
Device and application instability: Only if you are a fucking idiot who installs everything under the sun and insits on running about 50 Substrates at once.
Unreliable voice and data: Again, only if you don't fix the provider settings.
Disruption of services: none of the services I use or need have been disabled, and as far as I know, all of the services still run. Funny that.
Compromised security: Actually, Jailbreak allows you to FIX the security issues by chanigng the root password. Then the only security threats are your own fault.
Shortened battery life: Depends what you are running. And if you are backgrounding.
Inability to apply future software updates: So far NO jailbreaks have broken the iPhone OS beyond a simple restore. Stop making bullshit up Apple.
Seriously. They are getting lower and lower.
I don't use SSH. I use afc2add with iFunBox.
Shit ton faster.

What else can they do? It's more of a token move given the fact that jailbreaking is just as much a selling point as the brand name.

True. But they are bringing more and more traffic to the jailbreak market by doing this really. They may stop the slightly stupider portion of jailbreakers from using it though. Which is always good as they just ruin half the good stuff (read: Install0us).
If you're a total fucking moron, don't jailbreak. Simple.
Inaccurate, push notifications were only broken for hacktivated devices, the fact you're jailbroken doesn't make a blind bit of difference.

Except for the fact that, SSH isn't running on a stock iPhone so it's rather moot?
But anyway, Apple can spout shit on this all they like, doesn't mean anyone has to listen to them.
I think Apple is just getting tired of spending shitloads of money on R&D of new bootroms and hardware tricks to curb jailbreaks, and they're finally complaining about it. I think the ultimate suck would be if Apple offered George Hotz a job, and he took it. :derp:
If said event happened, we would either have two outcomes:
Apple would reprogram him to lock down and secure their hardware exploits... :frown: ...or we would have a man on the inside. :keke:
It loses battery so quickly because SSH is on, turn that off and you'll have a much more noticeable battery length
Go to cydia and download SBsettings
Restart your ipod
Slide your finger across the place where it shows the ipod battery, time and wifi (at the top of your screen)
Go to more, go to Set Toggles, and disable ssh.

Even just turning it off when you're not using it works. It's ridiculously easy to avoid these security breaches.
If Jailbreaking didnt exist I probably wouldn't have bought my 2G and 3G phones
It's mostly worth it though
More bullshit warnings from Apple...
Some 12 year old just restored their Ipod Touch
Apple is just trying to maintain their dictatorship over their products
If Jailbreaking didnt exist I probably wouldn't have bought my 2G and 3G phones
Same with my iPhone 3GS. I don't get why the fuck they're against it, I mean, it gets them a lot more sales.
Basically, they're trying to scare off any people who haven't jailbroken yet/don't know what the fuck they're talking about, which, looking through the comments frequently made in the AppStore reviews, are plentiful.
I don't use SSH. I use afc2add with iFunBox.

My god this is fucking awesome. Far speedier, and I can lock my iphone while transferring files.

...Because people's iPod Touches get hacked all the time.
One reason I use my Ipod touch as much as I do is because I've JB'd it and I run a few custom apps on it that aren't available otherwise.
...Because people's iPod Touches get hacked all the time.
What?
the fuck you talking about
There are no security breaches. You literally have to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network or to the hacker's computer via USB to get hacked. Even then, it's not like there's some hacker in every hotel scurrying around the public Wi-Fi, trying to brick iPhones.
...Because people's iPod Touches get hacked all the time.
To expand, I meant turning SSH off.
Jailbreaking basically allows the iPhone to be a real computer. Same rules apply.
Device and application instability: If you install to much shit.
Unreliable voice and data: Don't use old/beta/shitty mods
Disruption of services: Don't use old/beta/shitty mods
Compromised security: sudo passwd
Shortened battery life: If you install to much shit
Inability to apply future software updates: Update though Restore feature.
Same with my iPhone 3GS. I don't get why the fuck they're against it, I mean, it gets them a lot more sales.
Piracy, probably.
