I can understand why he's fired and while I'm not saying I disagree with the decision (someone of such high stature has to be held to strict standards, which he violated; also the issue of his subordinates no longer seeing him in a respectful light) it's sad to see such a decorated career ended like this. 34 years, brought to an end in one night of failure

Its not uncommon to move people around or even promote them when they cause problems since its the easiest fix to whatever problem they're causing.

I missed the bit where it said "removed from his job as director" and figured fired meant discharged. I'd hope that even if he was getting kicked out, he'd be given the opportunity to retire anyway.
