Rachael Johnston - during and after recovering from anorexia
At one point in early 2009, Rachael Johnston weighed 28kg (4.5 stone) and was wearing clothes made for nine-year-olds.
The 21-year-old from Warrington suffered from anorexia throughout her teenage years and had been given 48 hours to live.
She says her eating disorder was made worse by photoshopped pictures of celebrities in magazines.
Now healthy again, she and her mum Lynne have started an online petition to get airbrushing in photos aimed at children and young people banned.
"What I've said is, you aim for a ban and then, if a ban doesn't happen, at least you can talk about putting a logo or a description next to it," she said.
"I'd be happy for a logo to be put next to [a photo] to warn readers it's been airbrushed.
"Not everyone can tell if a picture's been airbrushed."
'Hiding things'
Rachael first started developing anorexia at the age of 13 after her grandmother died and she started being bullied at school.
After dieting for two years, she was admitted to hospital in March 2007 after collapsing at home.

She then spent five months on a ward in 2009 before slowly returning to full health.
Rachael now visits schools to try to warn young people about the dangers of eating disorders but says many children don't believe that some celebrity photos are airbrushed.
"I do think it will [help]," she said. "It's aiming it at the younger, more vulnerable people that actually don't realise.
"I go into schools and the young people say, 'They've not been airbrushed. You're just saying that.'
"I'm trying to make other people a bit more aware and to open their eyes a bit more about the world of anorexia and eating disorders."
Rachael says that at one point she she was buying hundreds of celebrity magazines a week.
"All my pocket money was going on magazines," she said.
"My mum and dad didn't even realise what I was buying because I was buying them on the way to school.
"You get very secretive when you get an eating disorder or struggle with your image. You're really good at hiding things."
These photoshopped pictures make me feel bad, ban them!
Honestly, if you're dumb enough to buy into that kind of advertising...

If you're dumb enough to buy into propaganda...
The problem is that there's nothing but this, and it's shoved down your throat 24/7. Eventually, you will believe.
so because your dumb... it should be banned?
I'm sorry but, I just don't see it.
EDIT:
lol wtf was i smoking last night
hit dumb move on end of story
But isn't airbrushing about skin complexion?
I've never understood when people blame anorexia on photoshopping and airbrushing. I am skeptical that seeing some pictures can have such an adverse effect on anyone's mental health unless they were already unstable in the first place.
I can see the argument behind seeking regulations on this kinda stuff
bombarding kids with unrealistic standards and basically telling them to keep up with an ideal that doesn't humanly exist, is pretty damaging to say the least

We all think we're smart enough not to buy into advertising. The problem is that it works its way into you subconscious.
I've read that a lot of the shopped pictures you see of models in magazines and stuff actually portray a physically impossible figure. A person couldn't survive with how thin they are based on the size of the rest of their body (namely the chest). I don't know how I feel about banning things like this, but it definitely isn't right or ethical.

People just need to be educated that those high high standards are total crap and no one could possibly get a body like that without doing some unhealthy things, and to grow thicker skin.

It needs regulation yes, but most of all IMHO we need some education programs against this stuff

"Advertisers commonly alter photographs to enhance the appearance of models' bodies, and such alterations can contribute to unrealistic expectations of appropriate body image – especially among impressionable children and adolescents. yeah, and this is why she's dumb, because she bought into that crap.
How can you seriously believe anyone can actually look like that? It's clearly pretty fake. Humans are meant to have at LEAST a little fat on them, not a body like models.

We all know that logically but it still has an affect on some of us. I think it's kind of how I logically knew as a kid monsters weren't real but I was still creeped out in the dark.
And I'd hate to say it but I'm pretty sure that butters757's source knows more about how the mind works than you do.

For gods sake look into a bit of elementary psychology, something about subconsciousness, etc, okay?
You make yourself sound like a complete idiot.

You don't develop eating disorders by "buying into" advertisements. The constant photoshopping of models creates an unrealistic portrayal of people. Yes, the models may look unrealistic and unproportional, but they still create a powerful cultural pressure about what the "ideal" body type is, and influences people's self-worth.

Yes, because children who are fed this shit for a majority of their lives will know any better. It's not like young girls know any better. It's pretty silly to call them stupid for buying into this when it's being constantly being forcefed down their throats.
your dumb
you have just said this like 3 times in a row holy shit
its you're
at least just say youre
For the people who are saying or thinking "oh they're just pictures get over it" :
When media and culture everywhere tell you that you need to be beautiful, and that you're valued by your beauty, and that in order to be beautiful you can't be fat at all, bombarding you with crap like this (although very often to lesser, much less noticeable degrees), claiming that those unhealthy and impossible bodies are the standard of beauty, and even your friends and family all pressure you to be more beautiful and "look pretty", and everyone says being fat is gross and ugly (and remember, "fat" is "anything wider than 'physically impossible'"), and all of this other crap, it isn't hard to bend to peer pressure.
It's not like these images are rare, either.

Oh, wait.

if you can't realize somethings wrong by the time you look like a twig, then IMHO you're pretty crazy. I can understand it creates a subconscious effect and causes you to believe that society truly calls for a body like that, but people who are anorexic generally seem to act really stupid / gullible in my experience. Intelligent people are able to filter out bullshit and not try to live to some ridiculous standard.
common sense says that if you don't eat, you die... by not eating, that's exactly what happens.
I'd say the same thing for people who go tanning far too much, if you can't realize somethings WRONG and keep doing it, then I don't know man.

please go ask someone who had an eating disorder the reason why they developed it, instead of calling them dumb for "buying into those models"

Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses. The people being affected by them don't realize that they're starving themselves to a dangerous point, but rather are doing it at a subconscious level.

Oh, intelligence is correlated to willpower, total knowledge, and countless other factors? Prove it. Anyone can suffer from anorexia, smart or not. My sister, whom is very intelligent, has serious self-image issues despite being very attractive according to everyone around her.

"I don't know man" pretty much covers it, I think.

I think you're missing a part of it if you think an anorexic person looks in the mirror and says, "man, i look like a fucking twig"
I see girls wanting to be this skinny image not knowing men like their curves, well me at least.
This should be passed, worldwide.

You have no idea how much ignorance you're displaying. You're calling an ADHD kid dumb for not calming down. You're calling a kleptomanic dumb for not being able to control his stealing. You're calling a schizophrenic dumb for hearing voices. You're calling an OCD dumb for not being able to stop washing his hands.
The brain doesn't always do the logical thing, we aren't computers. People have problems and they need help, not your insensitive drabble.
I'm all for banning advertisements that blatantly lie to people about looks. Not only is it bad for women, but the issue is starting to seep into male culture as well. I don't know about banning airbrushing itself, because it seems to me that a simple note stating the image has been altered would suffice in keeping the issue at bay. Not only is it good for the people, but it also limits the liability of the companies that do this sort of thing.
To the people who think letting the "dumb kids" believe what they see is a good idea, think of it this way, humanity's future lies with them, and letting them believe this crap no matter how obviously fake it is will make us end up in a future where we use Gatorade to water plants (yay reference!).
