What a money grab. Absolute trash
Oh Valve... I knew you would never come back.
Guess Dota 2's in the experimental phase that TF2 and CSGO went through, where they try wacky new monitization methods like paid decals or paid sprays. (or did Dota 2's phase start with paid Battle Cups?) edit: semi joke reactions aside, an analysis from a former F2P game community/product manager thinks this is Valve's monitization strategy after Dota 2 "peaked" , replacing big payouts from a small number of people with compendiums and battle passes with a more steady revenue stream, trying to make existing players' experience better rather than attract new players.
They've probably done the analysis on repeat buyers of battle passes etc and decide to package it up nicely. A series of one-off payments is pretty similar to a subscription, so it does make sense, but it sounds worse.
the name makes it seem like cashgrab trash, but compared to battle passes this is actually a saving for the "invested" dota player i reckon
the name makes it seem like cashgrab trash, but compared to battle passes this is actually a saving for the "invested" dota player i reckon
The machine learning suggestions is bizarre, the people most likely to buy the subscription are big fans, who would know what to do generally, and the locking of analytics you could see for free on dotabuff or whatever and spectator stuff behind it is shitty.
this doesn't taste very well
Content wise it's very poor so far, apart from the analysis tools (which should be free in the first place imo) you get a progression system (which is free in other mobas so lol), seasonal terrains, quests and access to battle cup. They did say they're gonna add more content, but Valve are masters of adding features then abandoning them, so I wouldn't even trust them with a subscription system

With machine learning it can respond to pretty much any hero composition appropriately. If I cared more about this sort of stuff I don't think paying $4 a month for it is all that bad for how many hours of entertainment I get out of the game. They aren't "locking" you out of anything, you can still use DotaBuff as you like. This is entirely accessible in game, in real time, with a bunch of info and content DotaBuff can't provide or track. This also includes a bunch of hero specific achievement and stat tracking. You also get some more typical compendium style content which people are already willing to pay for. I understand if this seems like total trash to non dota-playing, ex-valve fan, but for $4 I think the value is there for the intended audience, long term players who want to get more out of their Dota experience.
Oh Valve... I knew you would never come back.
It seems pretty innocuous, what's the big deal?
It seems pretty innocuous, what's the big deal?
It is a classic case of ex valve fan knee jerking.

Instead of learning what to use it just tells you what to buy. For some reason subscriptions sound a lot worse for me than just buying every pass that comes out (I buy every TF2 pass) when they are pretty much the same. edit: derp I forgot Dota 2 has item guides that are similar but free
I am so happy that I managed to quit playing.
It is a classic case of ex valve fan knee jerking.
Valve could release portal 3 for free and people would still find a way to call them scumbags.
From what I read on the dota2 subreddit this is actually better then the old Battlepasses. Granted they might be biased but they would also be the first ones to riot.
Overrall it seems decent, free battle cup access is a nice bonus. It's bizarre a subscriptions sound a lot worse than buying the passes. Also TF2 does something similar to the shard system now with contracts giving you blood money to spend on war paint for your guns.
It is a classic case of ex valve fan knee jerking.
The games been bleeding players for the last year at a pretty rapid rate and some of the features they hide behind this paywall could easily help draw new players in, but it seems like they're more interested in milking the current playerbase for everything they're worth
It is a classic case of ex valve fan knee jerking.
Excuse me if I wanted an actual game, or anything at all that would ACTUALLY be worth my money, and not an obvious cash grab like subscription bullshit, and everything else surrounding Dota 2 and the market, and Artifact as a whole. Because we all know the world needed yet another card game, for example, and this was completely necessary.
The games been bleeding players for the last year
While the player counts show the game is past its peak prime, I wouldn't remotely describe the last year as "bleeding players" at all. 700k as a peak concurrent user count isn't bad for an over 5 year old free to play game. This feel like a very natural, yet extended compared to most games, game life cycle. I don't think Valve expects Dota to be insanely popular forever, clearly the trend of the market has shifted from MOBAs to (at least currently) the likes of PUBG and Fortnite. As others have said, I don't think Valve is concerned about getting tons of new players, they want to improve the experience for existing and long term players. This is a means to that end, that also continues to keep the game profitable.
Valve could release portal 3 for free and people would still find a way to call them scumbags.
Valve can really suck a dick.
Excuse me if I wanted an actual game
Do you get mad at every company that makes things you don't like? Why is Valve obligated to make the games YOU want? Clearly their current efforts are going really well for them, they're a company after all not "Rocâ„¢'s" personal game developers.

Plenty of other publishers and game companies get shit for the same thing but valve gets a free pass. Why?

Are we living on the same planet because that's literally the outrage defining their fanbase

But even so there are still large groups of people who do give valve a free pass.

Plenty of other publishers and game companies get shit for the same thing but valve gets a free pass. Why?
Valve + Free Pass. Does not compute. All jokes aside, I too am a huge fan of HL2, and part of me is still holding out for the amazing HL3 experience everyone has built up in their minds. The difference is I've accepted Valve is a very different company than it was 14 years ago when it made it, and don't let the lack of half life 3 news bias my opinions of their other products. This allows me to enjoy their newer ventures (forex, Dota) while ignoring other things I'm less interested in without letting it upset me (forex, Console and VR ventures, Artifact). If the rumors about Valve are to believed, no one wants to work on HL3 and I can completely understand why. Literally every move Valve has made since HL2 has come under intense scrutiny for the reason of "why aren't you working on the greatest non existent game of all time, HL3???" That kind of pressure, changes to personnel at Valve (most or all of the original writers are gone), and changes to the demands of the industry come together to create a perfect storm of stagnated development. I also understand not everyone likes Dota, or MOBA's in general. But what I can't abide by is the implication Valve is somehow in the wrong for pursuing other extremely well polished and executed ventures in an ENTIRELY free to play format, and then bitching when a reasonable subscription plan comes out for certain fans of said game.
Why's everyone so butthurt? The game is still F2P.
Excuse me if I wanted an actual game, or anything at all that would ACTUALLY be worth my money, and not an obvious cash grab like subscription bullshit, and everything else surrounding Dota 2 and the market, and Artifact as a whole. Or the ones who look forward to Artifact? Or the people who use SteamVR and the Vive?
Perhaps I should of been more clearer that I'm directing the qeustion at him. But even so there are still large groups of people who do give valve a free pass.
Because every time there's a controversy involving Valve the discussion is inevitably tainted by the butthurt of fans who want HL3, thus resulting in knee-jerk reactions like above at things that at worst can be described as 'tame'. I mean, there are legitimate things to be mad at them about, like the lack of oversight with the CSGO gambling sites, or treating modders of older Source games with increasing disinterest, but not a goddamn subscription service with extra features for fans who want that stuff. The horror.
