China is ready to lend Ukraine $3.6 billion for various projects in its energy sector that will reduce the country's dependence on the Russian gas, Energy Minister Volodymyr Demchyshyn said on Feb. 23.However, there was no immediate confirmation from the China side or any details about the loan."Our delegation just arrived from China where we met with representatives of the Ministry of Commerce and the China Development Bank," Demchyshyn said, according to Zerkalo Nedeli newspaper, which broke the story on its website. "The representative of each organization affirmed the readiness to provide a loan for our projects.
Man, Canada gonna get pissed.
Also, yay China do your thing.
Was not expecting that.
I feel that there has to be a catch, somewhere. Ukraine was dirt poor before its civil war, now it's even more so and China isn't known to be the most generous place on earth.
What's their angle?
I mean China and Russia have been signing trade agreements out the wazoo over the last few years, and now they're lending a hand to Ukraine..
What if Russia attacks the infrastructure?
This feels like a diplomatic nightmare if shit goes down hill (which is certainly a plausible scenario).

China is interested in influence everywhere, including Russia. One day the Chinese might even begin to start pushing Russia around too.

Ukrainians can offer them weapons which is always a plus for the Chinese.
Doesn't China own a ton of land in Ukraine?

China builds infrastructure
Russia blows it up
China builds again
Russia blows it up
Ukraine forever in debt

china seeks to expand its soft power, that's basically it, kinda like what the US does, in other words, china is actually smart enough to realize hard power alone nowadays won't get you anywhere, something putin and a bunch of other tinpot dictators fail to understand.

China's only agenda seems to be to make a shitload of money anywhere they can

Ironically, many of the deals and treaties Russia signed with China are hardly equal (for some reason a lot of idiots think China and Russia are allies or friends against the west). Many of the deals are primarily in Chinas longterm interests, and will gradually put Russia into a state of dependence upon Beijing.
Raw materials, minerals, the Russian far east (Or Outer Manchuria as may become fashionable in the future), oil and nice markets to break into. You know, Haishenwai has a better ring to it than Vladivostok.

Same reason they're funding farming and infrastructure in large parts of Africa, they're investments so they can have greater pull in the future.
This is a glorious day for Ukraine
Also, its so odd to see China flipping off Russia, shit just got interesting.
PLOT TWIST ! Holy shit, I did not expect that.
I have a feeling Chinese interests will clash with Russian interests in the future, seeing as they've (China) also invested in central-Asian countries as well. Primarily former soviet-states.

On the bright side ukraine gets a sort of defense due to lending their asses towards the chinese. I guess it's a "chose the lesser evil"-situation.

You say China is a lesser evil to Russia?
That's just silly.
i love how everyone here seems to think about countries as caricatures and extremes.
Petrol Poroshenko with money in energy
chernobyl 2.0 to drive russians out?

I'm pretty sure they're securing themselves a good chunk of Ukraine incase shit goes down, however it's also a deal very beneficial from Ukraine's side of view, so it pretty much ends with both countries getting a satisfying part.
Ukraine relies on Russia less, but is now in major debt to China even if they paid off their debt to Russia.
