The work and pensions secretary has criticised people "who think they're too good" to stack supermarket shelves on back-to-work government schemes.
On the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, Iain Duncan Smith suggested that many "smart people" overlooked the importance of effective shelf-stacking.
A geology graduate recently won a legal victory over the back-to-work scheme. But Mr Duncan Smith warned against assuming that geology was more important than supermarket work.
Geology graduate Cait Reilly, 24, argued at the Appeal Court that her unpaid work placement at Poundland, which she had been required to undertake in return for continued benefits payments, breached laws on forced labour.
I'm biased as fuck on this issue since I'm waiting to go on a placement with the same scheme, but it's fucking retarded that some people who are already doing relevant volunteer work are being forced out of that and made to do unpaid work for for-profit companies, in something that doesn't offer any kind of useful experience or training to their area of training/employment.
I've already got some IT qualifications and all I really need is a foot in the door somewhere doing office admin or tech support and I'd be good, but the way things are going I'm likely to end up manning a till in B&M Bargains or lifting shit in B&Q.
Is this the same scheme that recently got shot down because they thought it was a good idea to not pay the workers?
"...warned against assuming that geology was more important than supermarket work."
That is fucking disgraceful!!!
Geology is a highly specialized scientific field of study!
We can talk about the humanities if you want though...

Technically people are paid but it's not a wage it's just job seekers allowance.

Geology IS more important than shelf-stacking. You don't want to die if a supervolcano decides to erupt and we have no controlled release method, do you?
Geology IS more important than shelf-stacking. You don't want to die if a supervolcano decides to erupt and we have no controlled release method, do you?
Hundreds of millions are going to die if a supervolcano erupts anyway.
Hundreds of millions are going to die if a supervolcano erupts anyway.
It would hinge on this:
and we have no controlled release method,
Currently, your statement would be definitely true.

Do you know the sheer scale of the Yellowstone Caldera? You're not releasing any of that without devastating somewhere and killing a lot of people.
Sure, shelf-stacking IS more important when you want obedient masses. When people are knowledgeable, it's all sorts of trouble. :v:
"who think they're too good"
Sorry for not agreeing with the idea of legalised slave labour.

It makes sense now.
As someone who is currently studying Geology and hopes to work in the field this sounds fucking stupid.
Aren't actually a lot of people with college degrees willing to do work they are overqualified for because they can't get a job suited for their qualification but they get turned down because they are overqualified?

Your picture is so appropriate.

Pay shelf-stackers as much as geologists or just shut the fuck up. Politician-scum
The work and pensions secretary has criticised people "who think they're too good" to stack supermarket shelves on back-to-work government schemes.
shelf-stacking isn't a wonderful job but it's good for some people. i'm pretty certain the reason people don't go for low-paying jobs is because you usually lose a lot of government support when you start earning certain amounts. i'm probably incorrect there but it's what i've heard.
can IDS just hurry up and admit he's not really good at anything
i'd like to see a public statement outlining how he has never really actually had a single moment of positive importance in his lifetime
shelf-stacking isn't a wonderful job but it's good for some people. i'm pretty certain the reason people don't go for low-paying jobs is because you usually lose a lot of government support when you start earning certain amounts. i'm probably incorrect there but it's what i've heard.
Yeah a lot of the time these kinds of jobs are only offered as a part time contract with overtime available here and there so income is often very inconsistent.
And yes, being on the threshold just past the allowed earnings level for a benefit of some kind can often be a problem.
Is this the same scheme that recently got shot down because they thought it was a good idea to not pay the workers?
Yes, he doesn't seem to understand what the issue is or why the courts agreeed with the two claimants and not the government.
Also shows complete ignorance of the case, because the woman currently works in a supermarket doing pretty much the same thing. Her issue was the lack of payment and the fact she was misled into thinking it was optional.
Aren't actually a lot of people with college degrees willing to do work they are overqualified for because they can't get a job suited for their qualification but they get turned down because they are overqualified?
how do you get turned down because you're overqualified?
how do you get turned down because you're overqualified?
because when you turn up to tescos with a degree in theoretical physics, its pretty clear you don't want to be there for a long time
What a fucking child this scheme successfully challenged and he starts being all passive aggressive and condescending
because when you turn up to tescos with a degree in theoretical physics, its pretty clear you don't want to be there for a long time
ok that makes more sense
Of course they think they're too bloody good, they just spend £50,000 on the course, damn fucking right they're going to expect something better than shelf stacking which can be done by almost any idiot.
Unemployment benefits are £56.25 a week for the under 25's (https://www.gov.uk/jobseekers-allowance/what-youll-get)
Working 30 hours a week at minimum wage for people aged 21+ is £6.19 an hour. (https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates)
Working minimum wage for 30 hours a week gets you £185.70 a week compared to the £56 she was getting, so she is being forced to work for £1.87 an hour, not only is that illegal she would also lose her benefits if she refused. it's practically slave labour. (https://www.gov.uk/jobseekers-allowa...er-information)
My post from a previous thread shows the huge problem with it.

Fucking cunt.
When you end up in around £21k worth of debt after university (even more now since the fees trebled) getting a degree precisely so you don't have to do jobs like stacking shelves it's not hard to understand why people feel it's below them.
Let's see how you fucking like stacking shelves iain, it's contributing more to society than you currently are.
It's rather asinine that you'd get a degree in something , without looking to see if, i don't know, there were actual openings in the field.. Jesus its like whining that your liberal arts degree is worth less than the paper its printed on, and your life sucks because no one can use you.
congratulations, you skipped past the title of the thread, the content, and article and posted your own thoughts on liberal arts
