The City of Los Angeles recently held a gun buy back where over 800 firearms were collected in exchange for grocery gift cards or pre-paid Visa cards. So what’s so newsworthy about that. Oh just that a Sturmgewehr 44 was turned in for a gift card. Yes, a $30,000+ piece of history was exchanged for a gift card. This isn’t even the first time an StG-44 was turned into a gun buy back, it happened in Hartford, Connecticut last year as well. At least those police officers were kind enough to tell the owner the real value of the WWII rifle they had in their possession and let them sell it instead. Hopefully the StG-44 in LA was donated to a museum or something, I doubt it however. I wonder how many others are out there sitting in someones attic somewhere.
I hope LA gives it to a museum, but considering how rabidly anti-gun it is around here, most likely it will be melted down for scrap our cut into a thousand pieces or something. They won't, they'll crudely cut the receiver up and melt it for scrap, and then turn it into paper clips, and turn the stock and pistol grip into wood chips for playgrounds.

Shit, even if you're incredibly anti-firearms, you have to recognize that that's a piece of history. I mean Christ, it's not like it's going to hurt anyone if its donated to museum, there's no need to destroy it
They won't, they'll crudely cut the receiver up and melt it for scrap, and then turn it into paper clips, and turn the stock and pistol grip into wood chips for playgrounds.
Stop it, my heart can't take it
Just think, someone's great-granddad/granddad/dad dragged that thing all the way back from Europe after going through the hell of WW2 only for it to be neglected then traded in for something worth much less than its historical value because some tightasses need to get their feel privilege up to scratch. It's LA, its gonna be melted unless someone buys it from them or someone on the force has a right sense of mind and knows its historical. A museum will pay of the ass for any StG-44, there's a one in normandy, france which paid over €60,000 for 2 models, one was in really poor condition and the barrel is bent to fuck.
So give a piece of history to a bunch of morons who will probably fucking destroy one of the last remaining STG-44's? fucking fantastic.

You have to make it yourself or pay a small fortune. Make's it pretty much just a historical paperweight than something that can go kill X or Y at Z because guns are bad mkay.
I'm not even a gun-dude and this makes me cringe and scream with sadness.

They can't arbitrarily decide not to melt down one of the pieces.
This is why I'm careful with Kar98k my Opa gave me.
Please ATF, step in and actually say some bullshit about how, "Blah blah, unregistered automatic" and save a piece of history.

This weapon was one of the first Modern assault weapons and even someone like me who isn't exactly pro-gun think this should be in a museum. Made an major impact on history even though it wasn't used that much since by the time they produced these, Germany was already pretty much doomed.

The Soviets shipped a load out to 'client' nations after the second World War.

The thought of it being scrapped is sickening. Reminds me of many years back I got to meet a sword collector who told us of this time he saved a 1700's Japanese tsuba (sword hand guard) from this old lady who wanted to throw it away or destroy it because the markings "were satanic-looking".
If that image is correct and they actually showed it off to the press and such, I have a feeling they acknowledge that it's historically significant and they won't smelt it down. I mean they couldn't be that stupid and be like "Hey look at this stg-44 only one of about a few still remaining on Earth ok throw it into the incinerator time to make some cheap scrap for paperclips"
There was a video a while ago of Syrian soldiers/rebels receiving a shipment filled to the brim with StG-44's.

Although I wouldn't be too surprised if it got "lost" in the records, like all the handguns that got lost in 'boating accidents' when Britain got rid of them.
Rather sad that such a valuable and important piece of history is going to be destroyed.
Holy shit, you guys act like it's some sort of super rare mayan artifact. 430,000 of them were produced and every war museum, collector and their mama has like a dozen of them.
Such a historic gun should be preserved. Please make the right decision LAPD :<
You guys really think that after a news story and realizing it's worth tens of thousands of dollars they are going to melt it down?
