• Edward Snowden tells Der Spiegel NSA is 'in bed with the Germans'
America's National Security Agency works closely with Germany and other Western states on a "no questions asked"-basis, former NSA employee Edward Snowden said in comments that undermine Chancellor Angela Merkel's indignant talk of "Cold War" tactics. "They are in bed with the Germans, just like with most other Western states," German magazine Der Spiegel quotes him as saying in an interview published on Sunday that was said to be carried out before he fled to Hong Kong in May and divulged details of extensive secret US surveillance. "Other agencies don't ask us where we got the information from and we don't ask them. That way they can protect their top politicians from the backlash in case it emerges how massively people's privacy is abused worldwide," he said. His comments about cooperation with governments overseas, which he said were led by the NSA's foreign affairs directorate, appear to contradict the German government's show of surprise at the scale of the US electronic snooping. --- Chancellor Angela Merkel pointed out during President Barack Obama's recent visit that Germany had avoided terrorist attacks thanks to information from allies. But she says there must be limits to the intrusion on privacy and wants this discussed next week in parallel with the start of EU-US free trade talks. Berlin has alluded repeatedly to "Cold War" tactics – Merkel used the term again on Saturday at a political rally – and has said spying on friends is unacceptable. Her spokesman has said a transatlantic trade deal requires a level of "mutual trust". The domestic intelligence chief has said he knew nothing of such widespread surveillance by the NSA. But German opposition parties – with an eye on September's federal election – insist that somebody in Merkel's office, where the German intelligence agencies are coordinated, must have known what was going on. --- Germans are particularly sensitive about eavesdropping because of the intrusive surveillance in the communist German Democratic Republic (GDR) and during the Nazi era. Snowden, a US citizen, fled in May a few weeks before the details he provided about the NSA were published and is believed to have been holed up in Moscow airport since June 23. Bolivia offered asylum on Saturday to Snowden, joining leftist allies Venezuela and Nicaragua in defiance of Washington, which is demanding his arrest for divulging details of the secret US spy programs. Der Spiegel said the interview was conducted while Snowden was living in Hawaii, via encrypted emails with US documentary maker Laura Poitras and hacker Jacob Appelbaum. Snowden told them that America's closest allies sometimes went even further than the NSA in their zeal for gathering data. The Tempora programme of Britain's GCHQ eavesdropping agency is known in the intelligence world as a "full take". "It sucks up all information, no matter where it comes from and which laws are broken," Snowden said. "If you send a data packet and goes through Britain, we'll get it. If you download anything, and the server is in Britain, we'll get it." If the NSA is ordered to target an individual, it virtually take over that person's data "so the target's computer no longer belongs to him, it more or less belongs to the U.S. government".
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/07/edward-snowden-spiegel-nsa-germans
Do not worry citizens, this is for your safety. We must do this to stop the terrorists. This is for your safety.
To be fair, who wouldn't want to be in bed with Germans?
To be fair, who wouldn't want to be in bed with Germans?
Only with young and hot ones
To be fair, who wouldn't want to be in bed with Germans?
soviets and jews circa 1940
To be fair, who wouldn't want to be in bed with Germans?
Don't forget the Swedes.
Everything and everyone is fucked pretty much
Knowing Germans, "in bed" probably means tied up and gagged. I don't think there are Germans without a BDSM fetish.
if my knowledge of german fetish porn is any indication, the nsa has a lot more to fear from snowden's leaks than just wiretapping.
Knowing Germans, "in bed" probably means tied up and gagged. I don't think there are Germans without a BDSM fetish.
I'm actually not into BDSM. Besides: Shit's really about to hit the fan, eh?
Knowing Germans, "in bed" probably means tied up and gagged. I don't think there are Germans without a BDSM fetish.
NSA is into tying up and gagging people though, so they'll fit right in.
NSA is into tying up and gagging people though, so they'll fit right in.
That's more the CIA's thing.
That's more the CIA's thing.
NSA likes to watch from the corner and jack off to it.
As long as the Germans got dinner and a movie first, its okay
From what I can tell the whole incident isn't gathering all that much momentum here considering the size of it and the upcoming elections. Even the opposing parties (that are in the comfortable position of criticizing without actually being able to do a lot and would gain a lot from making the current parties look bad before the elections) are on the "now now Mr. USA, that wasn't very nice of you..." train. 'cept for the Pirate Party maybe, but then again this is exactly their topic. I wonder if at least they could get enough votes out of this to make it into parliament this time. I'd expected something more aggressive, but I guess with globalization and the EU it doesn't really pay off to play hero The opposition might not want to ruin their position in the case of being elected, considering Germany's export-heavy economy is more important to the EU than ever since Greece and stuff happened. It's also why Bolivia has an easier time putting their foot down. I think people would be more upset if this was strictly German politics, but I guess indirectly telling the US to get their shit together isn't quite striking enough and knowing you can't make a direct impact by writing local politicians or voting for somebody else in elections is pretty discouraging. I do hope this issue doesn't simply fizzle out and everyone forgets about it and just moves on, 'cause that would be the ideal case scenario for everyone but the actually affected citizens.
Not really surprised. Pretty much any country that has the means to spy, does spy.
Lynch our leaders i say. Really. This scum has become so secure in fucking over the population because they dont have to fear us anymore.
soviets and jews circa 1940
I dunno, a number of Soviets got in bed with Germans, the Germans were unwilling, but they did anyway.
Not really surprised. Pretty much any country that has the means to spy, does spy.
Everyone spies on each other, everyone Googles each other, no one really cares because its nothing new. Its the Prisoner's Dilemma at work. Ideally, no one should spy on anyone ever but that's a wholly naive way of thinking. Honestly, no country on the planet that might be able to say anything cares. They may make a public statement going "Gasp! You might have spied on us? Well that isn't good!" But they don't care, and it isn't a shock because they already know. And in that same regard, if they have the capacity in any form they do the exact same thing right back to us. They do it to each other. You think Russia hearing about the U.S. spying on them is news to them? Not even a bit, they expect it every day of the year. I think they'd be more alarmed to hear the U.S. isn't spying on them because it is so atypical and counter-intuitive.

The kinds of invasions of privacy and global networks that were in use during the Cold War make this seem conservative by comparison. Never thought about it in the context of the prisoner's dilemma, but it's actually pretty apt.
I'm disappointed, but not really surprised I guess we will just give in to these shifts more and more until we are irrevocably fucked by our governments, hm?
Knowing Germans, "in bed" probably means tied up and gagged. I don't think there are Germans without a BDSM fetish.
More like "I don't think there are Germans without a fetish involving poo and pee" is more like it.

Everybody knows that everyone around them does it but everyone's still gonna act shocked when they walk in on you rubbing one out.
I wonder how long people are going to tolerate this before we start seeing mass protests. It's gotten to the point where the government of almost every western country needs to be locked away for the rest of their lives for treason.
You seriously think this is not occurring in Eastern countries?
Can any German here explain to me why Germans are the holders of the title of scat porn specialists?
To be fair, who wouldn't want to be in bed with Germans?
They seem like they would rate my performance a C- no matter how well I'd do, and then coldly tell me the money is under the pillow and to close the door on the way out while they go back to making their 4-door sedans.
You seriously think this is not occurring in Eastern countries?
It does happen, they're just used to it there is all.
