• HDD making a "MMRNT" noise/slight grinding.

is this just my HDD reading or is it failing? it's making a RRRMT noise like when a CD Drive reads slowly. it's worrying me, i also heard a "MMRRNT" and a "POIST" noise as if electricity's flowing into a socket on startup. is this normal or is my hard drive dying? i've had no memory errors etc but still. [editline]02:21AM[/editline] just to clarify, it happens rarely, just during occasional writing/reading files. [editline]02:21AM[/editline] or just when idle [editline]02:28AM[/editline] note that i cleaned dust out last saturday so it isn't a fan blockage(or it could be my EVO im not sure)
If your not sure, do some major hard drive work(like copying) and then listen to different parts of the computer to pin point the sound. It sounds like hard drive failure to me, better back up important shit.
Back up everything just in case. Find a SMART utility for your drive as well.
All you can really do is back everything up and hope for the best. Constant high-pitched whining = bad Clicking = bad High-pitched "getting up to speed" sound = old drive
there's no clicking or odd hazard light sound like most drive failures ive heard. i guess i'll back up. there's no clicking or high pitched sound but there is a MRRRT sound as if it's reading from the disk in increments. it might just be reading it. you never know. i did recently clean out dust so it might be that and i have my fan quieter now. so it might have been happening for months and i just havent heard it.
ITT: disk onomatopoeia Use [url]http://www.hdtune.com/[/url] to test out your hard drive, SMART settings like others suggested might tell you the cause.
hdd 1 was fine hdd 2 is scanning. 0.1% damaged. [editline]05:53AM[/editline] 0.3% damaged. note i havent formatted hdd 2 in over three+ years so its probably just where i don't defrag. [editline]05:54AM[/editline] 0.4%.
Any way you could record the sound for us?
not really as it happens at random. [editline]08:39PM[/editline] i've checked all the HDD failure/stuck spindle/bad heads sounds for my brands of HDD so i'm quite certain it's not a failure warning
problem has been solved. it was my faulty graphics card's fan, i've since got rid of the card.
